Copyright Doubt

I was working on a project and found myself with an issue.
If i am using something that is public domain like a video or a movie,and on it has copyrighted music,can i use the movie freely?

Didnt know exactly in which sub forum to write,sorry if i should have written in another

If a video or movie is in the public domain then you can use it freely

If the music has been added later then you won't be able to use it.

What do you mean specifically mean by the movie/video is in the "public domain" in this case?

Its media that isnt copyrighted by anyone,and that you can use freely

I meant more along the lines of, are you 100% sure the movie/video is in the public domain? I've seen people before think that because certain material is available online, then they are free to redistribute it.

Where you do have something that you are free to redistribute, that does not mean you can pull it apart. Many items in the public domain still have individual elements that have either copyright or trademarks attached to them.

I am 100% sure the media im using itself is public domain,the music inside the video/movie its copyrighted but i think in this case they cant do anything

I'll give you a simple example. The copyright for Popeye expired a while back in Europe (you can watch all the cartoons online and redistribute them within Europe), but that didn't mean anyone could put the face of Popeye on their products and services because someone still owned the trademark.

Then I guess the big question is going to be whether the original owner of the movie/video had permission to use the copyrighted music in the first place.

I assume the piece in question was 'dedicated' to the public domain rather than the copyright expiring or not being renewed?

Can't you just remove the copyrighted music of the video and use some free (libre) music instead?

As ender78 said just replace the music. There are lots of programs that can do this, or you could get it done on fiverr.
