check out Ahrefs's link intersect tool (https://ahrefs.com/link-intersect). works like a charm finding competitors backlinks

Check the TF if they look really bad dont but replace them with a better link so you know you just as many but better quality -

Avoid that, try to get only the quality links from your competitor if any.

Never create links where you comp created find what they are doing and do better than that you will definatly outrank them. I usually do this. If I feel comp backlinks are more quality then I will try to pulish there. Just forgot about tire3 links what your comp made. Always keep an eye on comp strategies.

Do not do it. If they have links from web2. 0 or blog comments or any low quality site, you can try few quality backlinkbacklinks enough.
You can stay above your competitors.
