Here is what I don't understand, are silos pages that have more competitive keywords that you want to rank for? Or are they just a way to group pages?

Here is my dilema I have lots of different types of product keywords, e.g. portable robots, wooden robots, small robots, etc. These are all types of robots so do I group them under one silo e.g. "Types Of Robots"?

That type of keyword ("Types of Robots") wont get searched very much though so do I group them under that silo or make them all individual silos?

You can have them individual one's. That will give more chances to improve in search as the products are updated often to them.

Thanks but won't it get a bit cluttered especially if I have 10 of these plus other pages that aren't grouped under anything?

The point of siloing a site is to keep all pages linking only to related pages, and the home page.

If you silo a site you should have no unsiloed pages that contain content.

Having a silo with only a few pages is a waste of time.

If you have robots as your theme, you silos can be done number of ways.

    Robots under $300
    robots under $500
    Military grade drones
    underwater robots
    flying robots
    robotic mules

or you can go something like:

    AR drones
    Topbot Domestic robots
    robotic vacuum cleaners
    Manufacturing robotic stations

    Or even

    Robot parts
    robot plans
    robot games

    and so on.

The whole point is to create a silo that will keep the pages in that silo connected to other pages in the silo only, which are all related in some way to the silo theme.. All this does is change all the internal linking to related page links, making them more powerful. The internal anchor trxt used should be traffic keywords when possible.

The purpose of a silo is to funnel link juice and visitors. For the sake of link juice, put your most competitive keywords at the top of the silo (so they get the most link juice) and the least competitive ones at the bottom of the silo (since they need less juice to rank). From there it's up to you if you want to link back to the homepage or top silo page from the last page.
