You have definitely overpaid for a computer with those specs, another $200-$300 could have got you something semi-reasonable.
Running a VPS and running scripts/software on your own computer aren't the same.
I run several computers but still have VPS's so that I always have software/scripts running 24/7
Also a 25mbps connection only just qualifies as broadband.

im running ser and cb on a dell 1545 laptop with the core 2 duo porcessor, and 4gb. Let me tell you this processor is way outdated. SER and CB @ 100 threads is maxing it out, and its super hot. I give it 2 weeks before it dies and I reinstall win7 on my i5 laptop

You can manage a vps from a smartphone.

i run gsa ser, cb and scrapebox nowadays from my ancient acer aspire 5736z
it's a really trusty piece of laptop, however specs are low, and the internet is reeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaally slow like 30mb
gsa could run at 200-500 threads from this crap on original windows 7, but I just set it up the noob way and let it run with 20 private proxies
lpm was of course low
I just reinstalled a win7 on this laptop. I'm now happy if it doesn't crash at 50 threads

With a VPS you don't use any of your home resources. If you're running multiple applications you should be slightly concerned about your bandwidth at home, by using an external datacenter you use their bandwidth which should be at least 50Mbps. You also use the datacenters power and if you're running a 300W power supply 24/7 the increase in your electric bill might even pay for the VPS.
One problem I see with running a VPS for SEO work is performance. SEO apps are very resource intensive and you need a VPS provider that isn't overselling their resources. All providers usually give some kind of money back guarantee though so get one and test it.

For what exactly? You can't get much with AWS EC2 for $1 per year, maybe with a micro instance during the 12 month free trial, but a micro instance isn't go to do much for you in the way of SEO apps.

But you can make more money with a more powerful vps or dedicated server, the extra cost is worth it.

I agree 100%, the more power, the more threads you can use the more work you can perform. When I've done SEO work before it was on a quad core xeon with 16gb ram dedicated server using a 1Gbps uplink. I did some great stuff with that thing.

All you guys forget that VPS has CPU limitation for 15-25% for single Core that's mean you got 1/4 Core if entire server have 4 cores this means 1/16 HDD 1/16 networkcard 1/16 RAM access time . 1/16 OS and this in best cases .
don't forget that single VPS server has 48 VPS account on it . I know CPU will be powerful like E1340 .
Last if your C2D is E8400 you will be lucky as it single threads compare to Xeon E5620 . and I agree with others the PC was Pricey .

I run my VPS' s from a raspberry pi, it's awesome wee bit of kit for 35$, it's 5 volts and dedicated to background tasks. Does everything your computer does except is the size of a credit card and a fraction of the price. Plus makes me feel young cool and wiffit innit!!
