Computer Specs for 4K Editing

Hi guys, I need to use Premier Pro to edit some 4K video using Essential Graphic (which, by the way, I know very little about), but I am skeptical my computer is fast enough for efficient video editing work. I was wondering if you could take a look at my specs below and let me know upgrading which 2 pieces of hardware out of 4 right now will give me the most bang for the buck. Thanks!

Processor: Intel i7-2600k
GPU: NVIDIA GTX 1060 3GB
RAM: 16GB DDR3 RAM
Hard drive: 2TB 7200RPM HDD

It kinda works, but it takes awhile to re-render clips when I make small changes. I really want to figure out a way to speed up the process...

I'd upgrade your RAM to 32GB for 4k editing, it will make a difference IMO. You have what I feel are the bare minimum specs for 4k editing. You can do it, but it could def be better.

If money is no object upgrade to a CPU with more cores. I have Ryzen Threadripper 1950x -- works quite nicely
 
You need the igpu acceleration provided for the latest intel cpus. Add in a new 7/8th gen CPU and keep the GPU as is. New DDR4 RAM upgrade would be nice too :)
 
Even though your CPU is an i7, it was launched in 2011 so I guess that would be your main bottleneck. Get the newest one your motherboard supports and it should speed things up. I don't know how much an SSD would help with Premiere pro, but it surely helps a ton with the overall OS speed. They're pretty cheap nowadays too, definitely worth having one for the OS and apps, while the mechanical drive used for data storage.
 
The new Ryzen chips are great and very inexpensive. I have a 3700x, 64gb RAM, 512gb & 1tb nvme + 2tb HDD, 1060ti OC 6gb. About 2 years ago I had a i7-2600k with a gtx970. I overclocked the 2600k and noticed a big difference. You can easily overclock it. Just make sure you have good cooling.

Make sure you have graphics acceleration enabled in Premier or After Affects. This will help you.

Ryzens arent suitable for adobe stuff especially PP
 
idk why people are recommending getting more ram. What you need is a better CPU if you want to render faster and reduce wait times.
 
Agreeing with the general sentiment here. What really needs upgrading is the CPU. Issue is that you have basically the best processor for your current motherboard. So what you really need to be looking into is the cost of getting a new motherboard and CPU. Also honestly if you're to upgrade to an SSD it probably won't help with general performance but the added responsiveness will make you never want to look back, promise. Finally your last priority is RAM I guess, but personally I don't see the need. And the GPU looks good.

See if you can upgrade your Dedicated VGA 4-8GB and Replace SATA with NVMe SSD for better performance.

Use the older version of adobe premiere pro if that fits your needs. The older version uses fewer computer resources.

I will change these two from your configuration

You must change these two for 4k video editing

Processor: Intel i7-2600k - upgrade to higher one
RAM: 16GB DDR3 RAM - 32 GB
 
I've got the same setup, but a lower model GPU - The CPU though (2600k) is not up to the task, unless you've got plenty of patience.
 
Check task manager > resource monitor and see what hardware is doing the most work.

however, id probably say CPU + hard drove would give you the biggest performance boost.
 
Thanks guys for all your suggestions! Based on what most people are saying, my CPU is pretty dated, so I will focus on upgrading the motherboard and CPU first. It's also very likely that I will also upgrade RAM to 32 or 64 GB either when I get a new CPU or shortly after that. I'll report back to provide an update on my computer's speed as it relates to doing work in Premier Pro and After Effect soon. Stay tuned!

Hey man it was a really good idea to check resource monitor tab. I opened it during rendering a video and my CPU utilization was at 70% or below while my RAM was at 97% the entire time. Based on these results, I think I will try to upgrade my RAM first to 32 or 64 GBs first.
