competitor taking up 3 spaces on first page

competitor's inner page example.com/inner-page is #1
#2 is competitor's homepage example.com
AND he is in google places

I am #3 AFTER google places. so it's
competitor inner page
competitor homepage
google places
me

its not fair, how can google let this happen? the same site should not appear 3 times!

if google is going to let this happen, then how can I do the same as my competitor? I dont think the answer is backlinks because I have better, and more backlinks than him!!

For a charity site I used to contribute to, which was banned this week as part of the Ebola Update, there are 5 results from the same site on the front page...subdomains like

spam1.whatever...com
spam2.whatever...com
...

It is not uncommon for me to have 2 spots on the first page in Google. It is a combination of copious content, proper interlinking on my site, with a bunch of pages targeting similar KWs and strong off-site.

Usually it is my root page and an inner page but periodically I get 2 inner pages doing that.

Thanks man, I think you just solved the puzzle. It must be internal linking structure because I didn't pay attention to that when I made the site. so the inner page I want to rank should be in the top navigation menu so the bots start thinking that page must be important?

That kind of depends on your site; my sites are all 400 + pages so I can't do that but a smaller site you could get away with that.

If you are using WP there are plugins for interlinking - nrelate is one - but I prefer to do that as I build the site. Granted it is a pain but it gives me more control over what is linking to what.
 
I am sure if the roles were reversed you would think it is fair. But like BassTracker stated content/useful pages with a good linking system is what works the best. Some sites will get "lucky" and achieve the multi listing search results but most are tied into their pre-site planning.
 
Maybe your Competitor had a "link building scheme that is both solid and authoritative. You can check the inner page ranking and the sites linking in, this will give you an ample knowledge about what's he is doing.
