Hey guys, when doing SEO research on my competitors, figuring who I should be able to outrank etc.
There is often forum posts on #1 for the keyword I am searching for, but is it possible for me to outrank them, if they have absolutely zero links/domains referring to their URL?

Or do they have too much domain authority etc. to keep me away from #1?

I think I can make a much more detailed article and more informational article, than their forum thread/post - Is it possible, if I get some great links/ref. domains etc. to my url and am more targeted towards the keyword, than they are or should I just stay away from battling with reddit and youtube on Google?

Before it was easy now it is not, wait for the quora sunami to pass

These "forum" posts are known as parasites. (Read this guide by @710fla )

As far as competition analysis is concerned, read this.

Hope it helped.
