competitor is outranking me with low quality backlinks

I think you likely got yourself some cheap PBN links that likely already fell off their homepage. Are you renting out the links or did a 1 time buy service? The good services typically have you renting them so you always have them posted on their homepage.

Another factor since you dropped rankings is your on-page SEO. Are you covering the same topics, similar word counts as the top 5 pages, etc.? Hows your keyword density/relevancy compared to those pages.

Ahrefs is well comprehensive. Look out for giveaways.

"I am very new to SEO" so you don't know if your competitors backlinks are crap o not, there is much more to a backlink than DA, on the other hand you most likely dropped due to the PBN's

I would suggest Ahrefs for backlinks checker.
Use ahrefs if you want to check baclinks, moz is limited in info
In my case the Ahrefs free backlink checker shows the same backlinks as MOZ.

As the others have already pointed out, Moz isn’t perfect. In fact, its backlink checker can get a bit iffy because it’s basically showing you its own data. For the best and most reliable results, you should always use multiple tools. Ahrefs and SEMrush come to mind.

SEMrush shows different backlinks than ahrefs and moz. But the backlinks they show are still very shitty. some of the websites where the backlink is placed do not exist anymore and the others are like https://allteacherjobs [dot] com/ which looks like super spammy to me.

How old is the site?
my competitor site is probably about 3++years old.

I didnt even know that there is a possibility of renting backlinks. I think it is a 1 time buy service.

I have no idea.

Yes, I am very new to SEO but I thought that some backlinks from https://allteacherjobs com/ and tumblr wouldnt be so valuable like some links from a PBN?

I am very new to SEO and so is my website(~10 months). I am trying to rank for a keyword and was on the 15-20 place according to search console but dropped to 30-50 places after buying some pbn links. I just checked the backlinks of my competitor who is on the 1st place with the free moz tool and all his backlinks(according to moz) are coming from tumblr. His PA(31) is way higher than mine(8) and so is his DA(48) mine is 11. Also the page about this keyword is about one year older than mine.
Now I am wondering why I can not beat him. Is this because MOZ can not find all backlinks linking to his page? Because when I check my page MOZ tells me there are 0 backlinks while search console tells me something else from 3 different sources.
What is the best (free) way to find the backlinks of your competitor?
If it was just your site and his/her site competiting for position 1(meaning your site is at 2) I would agree they're your competitor, but in this scenario, your site is not even on the third page of Google.

Why would you be punching above your weight?

Your site and the one you've singled out aren't competitors, maybe you're in the same niche but miles apart.

Moreover, a lot more determines whether a site deserves number 1 or not, not just the links.

I'd suggest you look for low competion keywords, to write content for, that way you stand a chance of ranking high. The easiest way to get low competition keywords is to find keywords that sites within your(site's) range of authority or even lesser are ranking between number 1 to 5. You can use ahrefs for that.

Whatever you choose to do, success.
