common trend for #1 sites...

These past 2 weeks have been absolutely terrible for my website rankings so I've been digging around and doing some research.

I compared backlinks for big authority sites, MNS, and everything in between. One thing that really stood out was that...

Now, I know this is one of the oldest and most commonly known things about SEO, but there is a bit of a twist that I began to notice...

The ratio between new content and blackhat links

How many people have been hit lately for unnatural links? Threads are popping up everyday about penalties and sites getting deindexed. Would you believe that there is somebody ranking for a 300k super hot KW by ONLY using ALN blasts? Why hasn't he got hit? I'd say the 4-5 new, unique posts he is cranking out everyday plays a huge role.

I've seen this same thing happen several times in the past, a site at #1 using extremely blackhat techniques that other sites get penalized for. The main difference is that they are pushing out new content on a daily/weekly basis.

This is nothing really groundbreaking, but SEO is always changing and just keep in mind that fresh, unique content will always play a big role in boosting you to the top...and apparently let you get away with more blackhat types of backlinking.

I once read a book called "dont make me think" which was about site design best practices, all the way through it i kept thinking to myself that all this is obvious stuff, when I put the book down i looked at my site and realised that i hadnt done any one of it, even though it was all common sense procedures.

The point im making is....we all know content is king but how many of us actually have that at the top of our priority list, most of the talk on any SEO forum is about linking building or PR etc. All the BST's that produce spun crap are busier than ever.

I would say take all your link building budget and use it to create really great content and then throw in some manual relevant links and your site will not only perform well but it will also be future proof to any updates.

*NB...Just realised that this basically means keep it all whitehat.

well I compete in a 1220000 global monthly niche and use mild blackhat techniques towards the moneysite and very very blackat techniques the deeper down you go - but it's an authority site with over 700 products/pages, with at least couple of pages being added each week.

Panda knocked me from #1 to #3, but I'm back to #2 now. I beleive it was all dodgy blog network links that got devalued - nothing they did to my site.

How often do I need to update the content of my site? Can't make changes to my home page so I update my /blog with a 700 word unique article every week. Is it good enough?

Content is always King and would always be. Humans need food and the food of search engines is content (unique) so if they find more food on your site they will come again and again and enjoy coming to your site. Makes sense ?

How about white hat on site (unique high quality content) and black hat off site (tons of automated backlinks)? I don't imagine content alone getting you traffic without backlinks as Google suggests. The website owner must do link building to get the website noticed.

When you say "they are pushing out new content on a daily/weekly basis", where are they pushing it out to? On a blog on their website? On portions of their home page? On web 2.0 properties or other websites with links to their main site?
