Yes you are correct in the places that you mention, but this tends to be because no English (or very little) live in these places.

I stay in Shoreditch which is in the east. Every month when I transfer the rent over to my landlord I could almost cry. However if you are educated especially around IM and have professional experience you can find high paid jobs quite easily. I am self employed now but when I moved here I found a job within 2 weeks. Just hit all recruting companies with your CV. Beeing active on Linkedin also helps.
Other than that London is freaking awesome to party. Especially the amount of Eastern European hotties is amazing ;-)

Start from living in cheap hostel. When you find a job move to own room/bedsit in flat/houseshare.
Look up gumtree, there's a lot of jobs for IM folks, if you are any good at IM basics.
Look up agencies offering presenter jobs at investment banks - designing presentations in powerpoint, pay is good.

I live in central London, and its expensive!
To rent a property your going to need some serious money, and as for jobs it will be hard to find some, and there will be no Olympic jobs that's for sure.
You're going to have to find a hostel or some very cheap basic accom and try and work your way up.
Personally if your stable where you are currently, don't come to the UK just yet, there's not enough jobs going as it is, and I think you'll be out of pocket before you know it.

Expect things to be a lot more expensive, expect a lot more general rudeness (1.5% people say thanks for holding doors open, people don't move etc...) and expect it to be difficult to get a job.
I stayed in central London for 4 months a while back and hated it. The traffic is a nightmare, the people are bizarre and the houses are tiny.
However, if you do manage to get a job and support yourself then be prepared for an amazing night-life. If you have a good group of friends and are up for a good time there are some great pubs & clubs in London but you need to be careful as it's easy to stray into the coke-on-toilet-seat crowd which isn't too good.
