My advice would be to stay away from .us domains especially if you're not an American citizen. I think .us domains are harder to SEO too but that's just my impression and I can't prove it. There aren't many .us domains ranking for competitive keywords that's for sure.
I have orgs that are blogs and do well and coms that do well but my .us just won't move much (5 years old) in the herbal market. I thinks it's mostly based on the competition for the keywords and if you can get them in your domain. If all of the com/net/org are gone for all of the keywords then it's likely you're facing some serious competition. So I would investigate the work done on the others and see if you even have a chance.
Also try adding the, my, your, blog or whatever to the domain and get the .com .net or .org
