College is a scam!!!

You want their social security too?
No, you just tried to sound like you knew something you 100% don't. Otherwise you'd respond with names instead of a snide comment.

Maybe you know lawyers without degrees you'd be happy representing you. 99% of people wouldn't, for good reason. The same good reason Google doesn't have people that learned AI from MOOCs building their neural networks.

Here's the name of someone doing AI at Google, Geoffrey Hinton. Major figure in the Google Brain project (and the father of deep learning).

Here's a list of his academic publications since 1974:

This is the kind of person Google hires for AI. Not some larper with a few online courses under their belt.

Most legit marketing funnel ever.
You're endorsed financial freedom but end up living paycheck to paycheck after taxes & insurance.

Maybe if US-Universities decided not to build climbing walls and massive whirl / swimming pools, tuition would be lower.
I think you maybe could define some social sciences as a scam. But real sciences like Chemistry, Physics etc. are still best taught in our current system.

College isn't necessarily a scam though, it depends on where you live and what you're studying.

Yeah if you're getting a degree in Philosophy you bet your ass you're not gonna make money out of that.

But if you're studying, say data analytics & digital marketing; you can use that to your benefit, especially in the digital age that we're now in.

A lot of countries in Europe offer free education that works. And if you're a rockstar student, you can get these things for free as well even in the U.S (scholarships, etc).

Plus, it's hard to quantify the social benefits you get from going through college or university. I can't put a price tag on the friendships I've made, nor the social experiences that I've experienced along the line.

At least, that's how it was for me. I used to be a very social dude before lockdown, and I've amassed great social skills through university.

College & University is what you make it out to be, like all other things in life.

Maybe in USA college/university is a scam, where you get in debt to have a degree.
Not to praise EU, but here its affordable to get a degree and it's if not on the same level or better thanmost American universities.

Well there's European universities and then there's European universities. If you're getting a degree from ETH Zurich it's a world away from getting a degree at the University of Montenegro.

Same with the US. Getting a degree from an Ivy League university isn't going to be a scam, but is going to provide the opportunity to work in many places and earn a lot of money most of the time. Your college debt can be paid off gradually, and you wouldn't have had the opportunities you had without the Ivy League degree.

A scam is getting ripped off. Getting a piece of paper that allows you to earn $100K+ per year is not a scam.

I'd prefer to get a world class education with a $xxK debt attached than get a free education from a crap university.

And you think you do 100%? Just because you found an example? Do you work at Google? No.
I know their HR hiring protocols, which isn't that hard to find online anyway. Up until a decade ago (give or take a few years), they wouldn't accept engineers without a degree and not coming from an Ivy League school. However, when competition for engineer talent started heating up a lot with Facebook & Amazon snatching talent left & right, they had to relax these rules. Now, they accept engineers without a degree and not necessarily coming from an Ivy League college.

I don't need to know their names, I just know that at least 1 engineer without a degree works at Google. I never said I knew how many, I just said a minority exists (which means at least 1). You on the other hand are insisting that 0 (zero, null, nada) engineers work at Google without a degree. So, you have no clue what you are talking about!

You obviously missed the whole point of what I was saying.

For a start I was talking specifically about AI engineers (the guy I referenced is an AI engineer, and I know a thing or two about AI), and secondly the point was that you bounced into my conversation and disputed what I said when the extent of your understanding about the situation is "I know their HR hiring protocols, which isn't that hard to find online anyway".

You have an overinflated opinion of yourself - you probably spend your time spamming Reddit or using Paint to make logos you sell for $10 on Fiverr.

Maybe stick to discussions about the best methods for creating spam or using Paint.

I assume college is like University in this country? It's around 9k a year, over 3-5 years so you end up with a debt of about 30-40k with housing fees etc.

I'm completely against Uni, unless it's 100% necessary for the career path that you want to follow.

There's little to no benefit to it. When I look to hire people at work, I'll scan over it, but I wouldn't particularly favour people with a degree ahead of those without. I'd take 1 years experience in the actual role ahead of 3 years at Uni in an irrelevant degree.

Out of the two of us, who has 2k posts in here, most of which are completely useless (like the one in this thread)? Yeah, I am the one spending time spamming on Reddit.
Also, if you knew a thing or two about AI, you would know that first, it's not called AI, it's called machine learning. Average people call it AI due to all the media attention on it. Second, you would know that machine learning is just an advanced field within software engineering. You don't need a special degree to start messing with it, all you need is a brain, strong will and some computing credits on the cloud. You definitely miss the first 2.

I have an MBA from a top school in the US. I'll tell you this, there are only two advantages:

1) The network of students and ex-students who are willing to help you because the are patriots of the school (I am not)
2) Employers value the name of the school

Other than that, the concepts/content is outdated and absolute bullshit. It doesn't serve a purpose or get you anywhere in life. As a matter of fact, I could put my degree in a garbage can and pee on it. It's that useless.

School is an absolute scam. It doesn't teach you anything, but we all are part of a system and we need to participate.

Haha ok Mr. been here since 2012 and posted 150 times. Yeah, appreciate the advice about my posting habits.. see you again in 2024.

Only average people call it AI huh? Thanks for educating me on the correct terminology to use. I'll have to go back and tell all of my lecturers at uni that taught AI they were saying the wrong words because some clueless random on an IM forum said so.

This is kind of what I was getting at when I was saying you have an overinflated sense of self-importance.. It would be like me trying to tell you how to spam Reddit. I don't need you to tell me what Machine Learning is and isn't, but thanks for your expert insight into my chosen field of study.

Ironically considering the topic of this thread and the way you jumped into it, I think this is pretty good support for the idea that getting a proper education is valuable so you don't end up thinking you know shit you really have no idea about.

You should apply to Google as an AI Engineer mate, I hear they take people with absolutely no formal education.

Machine learning is just ONE PART of Artificial Intelligence, but they are by no means synonyms....

this is definitely depends on you and also your country education system.

"We don't actually want to learn we just want to pass the exams"

This conversation is clearly pointless, as I stated before, you find your statistics within that video.

I understand you’re somewhat emotional about this topic, as you dropped out yourself.

But let us move on to real life problems instead of us wasting time discussing unnecessary things.

Your statements are meaningless without facts.

Did you know that there are aliens inside the moon who say degrees are worthless? Oh you want a source? Yeah its somewhere on YouTube, go find it.

I'm not emotional at all, I dropped out intentionally. It was an absolute waste of time, managers didnt care about degrees, students were half concerned about partying and half concerned about projects, teachers were just... well teachers... just regurgitating information. Ain't no way in hell I'm paying for that.

You have to remember, degrees were created before the internet. Have they adapted? No.

If I was interviewing someone for a role where being certified was not a legal requirement, I would not care about a degree. Do you know what I would care about? Does the person have knowledge.

Heck, in my service desk days, we had a guy with a computer science degree, who didnt even know how to perform simple fixes after 2 years of working there.

Tell me again why he should have the advantage of being hired over someone who can do the job and doesnt have a degree?

A lot of degrees nowadays mean absolute jack all.. just face it... times are changing, the golden age of information has arrived. And universities have not adapted at all.

@Dark Sky What did you study in college/university?

Software engineering, it was an absolute shambles. I wish I'd just learned it at home instead of paying for university. I passed the first year easy, I just couldn't put myself through another 2 years of my life there, so I dropped out. Could probably learn what they taught in that entire year in probably a week or two at home.

We had a 2 hour lecture teaching arrays, like seriously, 2 hours talking about how to do an array. It almost felt like a class for children.

The very first assignment was just a simple encryption/decryption program, everyone was confused and asking me for help, and saying it was impossible. I was sat there thinking "Wtf, you just subtract a few numbers and add them on, what's so hard to understand"

This was the point I realised that they made the course easier to cater to more people, to generate more cash. There was probably the odd guy in there who knew what he was doing, one of them was Russian. He was frustrated at how slow and easy it was too, especially since he came all the way from Russia and payed for it upfront.

If they made the courses harder so less people could get in, then the degrees would be more valuable. But sadly, it's all about revenue.

The internet really made many things became irrelevant including colleges. There are things that you can find easily online, but for some harder subjects or professions, it's required to go to schools to learn properly like lawyers, doctors, engineers, even politics ... If you want to become a programmer, YouTubers or start businesses (depends on which kind of businesses too), don't go to school, search google, go to youtube and online courses ... Degrees sometimes are just like clothes, you wear it and feel better, and people looking at you think that you are a little bit cooler.

You know a lot of people like tai lopez is saying its scam and stuff. But he had millionair mentor since like 16 or whatever old he was. Its not a scam, you get your head straight and working. Ofcourse there are people who reach discipline and other stuff by themself but its not everyone, these people usually fall for money spending, drugs alcohol and stuff,go through life bs. You do learn to think. And later you can use it. I would put some smart head who thinks college is scam next to a dude who graduated good college and tell each to learn new skill. Smart head would have hard time focusing for more than 10 minutes while other dude could go for 10 hours because hes been doing it for years. I mean it would be like trying to race lamborghini with your bare foot.
