Client SEO: How do you get new clients?

Personally so far, my most effective method has been cold calling. Which frankly, I dislike doing most of the time. I get on with it most of the time, but sometimes I find it difficult and slack off. I typically create a small strategy for the client, tell them on the phone and aim to get a meeting.

How do you get clients?

Yea, cold calling is shit. It takes it out of you getting hung up on and yelled at the whole day.

It is incredibly effective though. Do you back it up with an email before hand so you can go in with: "Yes, Dave is expecting my call - it's regarding my email thanks."

Other than that, something a little more passive would be a letter every month - next month may be the month the prospect picks it up and acts on it.

Do you know where or how you can hire someone to do it for you?

OP, the only other way to get clients is to advertise your SEO service, either by ranking in the local results (very difficult) or paying for Adwords. Really it comes down to cold-calling or advertising yourself, I don't think there are many options to choose from.

Yes, Cold calling and promoting your seo services via search engines are 2 good options, i use freelance sites and Fiverr to get new clients. i provide PPC services there at low rate so i get a client for sure and once the client is interacting I build relationship and start selling my other services too like seo, web design social media etc.

As in, can you get someone to come call for you?

You can, but it would require actually going out to hire somebody; this might be more than a fledgling business could handle.

Another option available to OP would be a lead generation service, although they tend to charge a fee rather than results based commission.

I've been slowly harvesting local SEO leads in my area since moving here seven months back. My plan this year is to utilize 7878's mailing method on a higher quality scale to appeal to potential clients.

For past SEO and ORM client work, I gained one client several years back, and everything since has been referrals stemming from that. Referrals, Retainers, Recurring payments. The three "R"s that will make your life easier, and lower your stress level.

I should adapt and start sending letters, like the idea

Great to hear, I will always cold call as a means to expand - I just cant wait until I can afford to hire someone to do it for me

You can probably already afford it. I think a lot of other people are hiring VA's from cheaper countries like the Philippines and India to do their cold-calling for very cheap.

My best method is:

Pay-per-click
Almost the best paid way to increase site traffic on search engines (a good example would be Google AdWords). Here's how it works: You'll pay a fixed price for each click your ad receives, and the ultimate goal is to convert these clicks to customers. Using Google AdWords, you can set your daily budget (e.g., 5 dollars/day) or a maximum cost per click (e.g., $ 1). Choose your keywords and phrases and Google will help you show your target audience.

Email Campaigns
E-mail campaigns are the most effective channel for sale if lists are made through correct methods and subscribers have in the past shown their intention to purchase. In terms of conversion rate, we noticed in the Analytics data, very good results for those who naturally grew the lists. It's important to choose a platform that delivers messages to Inbox at the best speed.

Announcements on social networking sites
There are many social networks in our days. But of all the best are Facebook and Google+.

Hi, there,

How about silent voice drops? that way you leave a voicemail without their phone ringing. Best location to find clients is on 4-10 on Google look for clients who will be willing to pay, usually, a big-ticket niche such as dentist, lawyer etc tell them you found them on page x of Google and you would like to have a chat about how you can help them rank and get more clients. Leave a contact number along with your name ask them to contact you for further discussion, those who return your call are hot leads. Make sure you can show them previous success.

I've found that locally focused ads on Facebook work at times. It has been a hit or miss, but it's worked at times. I have found that a solid referral system works well. I reward my clients with discounts for every referral they send my way. Most small business owners live in their business so getting in front of them can be challenging, which is why cold calling works so well. You go right to them. Direct mail is also a hit or miss. In reality, hire someone to do the cold calling for you. Hire a solid sales person while you focus on the work, and hopefully grow to outsource some of that, as well.

If you're good at SEO why are you selling it? Why not just rank your own sites, monetize them then flip them for 10x revenue? You mean to tell me that you have this expert knowledge of SEO, but you spend your time ranking other people's sites? This doesn't make sense, financially.

basically i had used freelance platform marketplace like as upwork fiver etc but when i thought its better to rank my own site than other people after that i started to working with my own sites. honestly say i making better that past with my sites :)

I stopped.
Applied for agency. Got permanent income + my affiliate sites and earn 3x now and work 10 hours less a week.

That's cool. What are your roles, are you working remotely or in an office.

might seem on the outside. but lets just say in corporate work you do stuff, you wouldt need have or want to do "seo" your own projects..

Cold calling is the most effective by miles.

You need to create a sales script, you need emails, and you need a plan.

I usually aim for an initial 3-4 minute conversation with a prospect. In that I can usually explain to them:
  • Who I am
  • Who I work for
  • What I am selling
  • Why They need it for their business
If all of that is good with them, i'll ask for an email address to send a full proposal with examples and ask them for a time to call back when they are free.

Give them 2-3 days to look over it, then when the time comes (the one you agreed to call back on) ring them up and discuss it with them.

It is a numbers game, you need to be making 50 calls a day, for roughly 2 hours. From that, you will send out 5-10 emails, and hopefully you can convert them at around 10%~.

In the beginning your numbers will be way off, you might send out 1 email after 100 calls, but you need to split test the sales script. After 100's of calls, I usually get through half of them now with a very cunning method.

Also, make sure you get the decision maker. Also, for the love of god, avoid start ups, people who claim they can do the seo themselves, etc.

This isn't the case of looking through an A-Z and just calling one after another. You need to find the prospects too. I will make a massive list (I use imacros to scrape directories) an I'll establish if they have a website etc and make an offer to them accordingly.

OP messaged me regarding gatekeepers. Here is my reply:

You are correct, the gatekeeper is hard to get to, but not impossible.

A decision maker will either be: marketing director or CEO/CFO (in smaller companies). The way to get to them I find is say something a long the lines of: "i've found some techinical issues I thought I would alert you about" or "i've found an issue on your website". Be vague to get past, then once you are through - claim the issue is a small on page issue or whatever, they'll be atleast one issue (especially if they actually need SEO, they'll be plenty of issues ;) )

After that, lay down the script.

You will probably need two scripts, one for the decision maker, then one for the gatekeeper. You won't always use the gatekeeper one however, but the reason for talking to the gatekeeper is always the same (issue with website, lack of seo etc).

Understand?

Under no circumstances do I think I am a sales god, I just have one method that i've refined and it works for me. Someone on here will always disagree with how you sell/how you should sell. You've just got to adapt and do what works for you.

I learned most of my knowledge from a Jordan Belfort course I shared on here some months ago.
