Please check the content you client website if unique that's good otherwise change all the content and target your focus keyword in the content and upload unique meta tags. It will definitely work.

Check the keyword competition that you are trying rank and On-Page SEO. Choose some low competitive and long tail keywords. Once you build links to your site, it takes some time to see results. Keep adding high-quality articles, build quality PBN links and guest posts.

Your concern should not be that your client is not in the top 300 but rather that they are not in the top 10.
@jhseo - I think you would be well served to partner with someone who knows SEO before taking on clients or get with one of the providers in the marketplace that sell full blown SEO and hire them to manage your clients sites.
It is a little disconcerting that you are not sure what to do at this early stage with your client and you could use a helping hand from a seasoned professional.

300? Not even 30? I think you should check your client website is not deindex. Then check kw difficulty using kwfinder. Finally, using copyscape to check whether the content is unique or not. Or you should refund the money for your client!
