If, as you say, that this is a large company, I suggest you go and see the CEO and explain what the IT guy has done to you. If you cant go in person, then call him. Tell him that what they have done is totally irresponsible, unprofessional and not expected of a large company like theirs. DONT SHOUT!!! Try and reason with him and you might find you get what you want. The other thing you could do is maybe name and shame them in the local newspaper.
It's not a massive amount - but not measly either - so maybe rather than stress yourself out - just move on because it's not worth it. Remember - what goes round comes round.

I hope you get a better contract elsewhere and it makes up for any losses you have incurred.

Good luck - don't let the buggers get you down.

Do they not have a budget? Are you sure they aren't just nobodies fooling you?

I think a company of this size wouldn't rip you. Maybe a company insider, but not the owner.. did you try contact the head person in charge of this million dollar company?

Sad to hear about your loss.
Instead of wasting more time thinking over it, just spend 5 mins of your life in doing this:

1. scrape 1000s of bad blogs and be ready for a scrapebox blast, as suggested by someone above. - 1 min
2. Login to twitter, facebook and other social networking sites and publicly let everyone know what that company did to you. It's the most deadly way to put your point across. - 1-2 mins.
3. Drop an email to them with the screen shot of step 1 and 2. No need to say anything in the mail. Screen shots are self explanatory. (No million $$ company would like to see them slammed publicly over social networks. They love their reputation. They might want to negotiate with you to take these reviews off after seeing this.) - 2 mins

Chill, relax and spend some time with your friends/family. Take this as a lesson and look for new clients.

I again would say DO NOT attack or extort from this person. Cost him his job and freedom. A bad check is serious and he is gonna dick off other people as long as he can if you dont hold him to the fire. He needs to learn a lesson but extortion and blackmail would look very bad in court. Also if you send threats to a big company you WILL hear from their legal departments service processing department, when they are suing you for damages...

Trust me and do not do this, the reason why I say that is because there are many people around here that do not give a **** about the hysteria about xrummer scrapebox... etc that make people think that by using this software will hurt your website, and they use those tools to blast the hell of their website and they get #1, and this only by using this tools.

So.. by doing that you may get your self in the position in which you will still work for them and still for free. I mean you could do them more a service than a punishment. You may bring them down for a while but they will rise and they will rise higher. Trust me.. I have a website raised in #1 only with this kind of backlinks.

So do not waste your time doing this the only thing you will achieve is to loose more time with this client.

This are well told advice.

What I can add to this is that I found somewhere around here a SCAM website where you can post people/company that scam you.

The idea is that the website have a very good ranking and reputation and by adding your client company name (maybe kw not sure) on that website each time his name will appear over the web in first position will be a link from this website that will explain they are a scam.

I take it that he is a local client where you live in the same city or at least the same country and writing bad check is supposedly a crime so you have have to talk to a lawyer and sue your client and get your money plus a fine or jail.

Most of the answers here prove a lot of kids hang around on this board.

The official way of dealing with this (assuming you're both in the same country), is to send an official letter stating that they have a balance owing to your company and that they have X days to pay. Over here we call them "mise en demeure", dunno what they are called in your neck of the woods.

If they don't pay in that alotted time, its off to small claims court or to a debt collection agency.

If he's a multi-million dollar company, chances are your bill is small potatoes and he isn't paying simply because he doesn't like you. Once it gets legal, he'll pony over the cash just to get you out of his hair.

Do anything else, and you'll be losing your time.

Unfortunately the best course of action is to have this be a learning experience.

Don't do anything to ruin his business, as that could come back to bite you in the ass big time.

Always get the payment upfront, and cashed immediately in your account before moving forward and doing any real work. That way you are sure that something like this can't happen in the future. People are sketchy and will do stuff like this all of the time. Setup systems to deter this and prevent it from happening.

every guy suggest you to kill the site or left back negative seo on the project. i say : do nothing, forget the money and forget the thing. concentrated up to new clients. maybe contact an lawyer, show him everything and let him do the job.

This thread contains some awful advice.

Blasting your client's site may give you a feeling of smug satisfaction. But what then? You still don't get your money and learn nothing from it. Plus you may begin to get a poor reputation. What potential client would want to work with you then if word gets out? Remember: the new SEO company they have hired probably talk to the same potential clients you do.

Steps:
* Improve your internal processes so it doesn't happen again
* Send a reminder letter that the invoice is overdue, follow-up with a phone call if necessary
* If no payment is made by the due date, ask a debt collection agency to take it on
* If you consider blasting a client's site because of some misplaced feeling of injustice, please quit and seek a career where you don't have to deal with people

Send him a first and final invoice notice for unpaid fees.

If he does not respond, send the invoice to a collector who will take a percentage. Or sue in the small claims court near you (or whatever your country's equivalent is).

Trying to harm his site won't get your cash and will just waste your time. Sure, it might give you 30 seconds of feeling smug, but personally I prefer the cash.

I always collect a set-up fee upfront which is much larger than normal monthly charges. example: closed an attorney - $2000 paid upfront...followed by $ 800 monthly paid on the 1st of each month...no exceptions. I do this with all my clients.

Ozzie told me "I beat people up for a living cus it's fun init", and yes it can be fun but with a risk not worth taking IMHO. 100's of clients don't pay their fees each year in my business, but it's (mostly*) not worth the time to chase them up - time=money.

My suggestion, weight up the costs and benefits...
