I had a client call me yesterday asking me to try and and hurt and wants me to go after a competitor of theirs.

Apparently, the competitor was an employee and he taught him all the tricks of their industry and how to do EVERYTHING. The employee quit and opened up a shop of their own and is going extremely well.

Unforutnately the client was not smart and did not have them sign any paperwork and legal action is not an option for them. The client came to me and wants me to hurt their web presence whether its natural rankings or Adsense.

Normally when I see threads like this, I tell them just to out rank their competitor which is what I told the client. However, they are so hell bent on revenge they don't care. He just wants to do it.

I don't think bombing a site with xrumer links actually does works, so what about click bombing? I also thought about creating a rip-off report and ranking it. Anyone have any ideas?

Yeah I would say the only way to hurt them would be to put out negative publicity.
Trying to hurt their rankings with links will never work.

Personally I wouldn't do it. Just time wasted that could be spent improving/expanding their business.

Explain to your client that anything you do to their former employee, that person could do in return and may well cost them alot more financially in the long run.

Best to concentrate on own product and services and lesson learned. At the end of the day this sort of thing happens alot. And also this is the clients version of events and there are always two sides to the story.

Recommendation is to turn down the request and explain aa above.

I can understand trying to beat your competitor heck even copy his ideas and twist them into your own up to a certain extent..

but I can never condone writing fake/full of lies reports about other people's products/websites/contents.. that's just wrong.. in any sense be it morally or whatever..

everyone has bills to pay in life.. that's not an excuse to damage or hurt other people's sites.

:ohwell:

Fake negative publicity or claims can have very serious financial consequences for the company you're working for.
If you do it you need to use proxies 110% of the time, and honestly, it's best practice to have proxies up on all of your internet usage 100% of the time during this effort until it's totally completed.

However, you can and should attempt to dance the hell out of their site. I've seen it work quite well especially recently now that google's algo is taking weeks to move sites up even after excellent backlinks.

Never said anything about making things up or lies.

What I was talking about was creating a rip off report of what happened and exposing the person.

and don't forget your client could give you up as the one who did all this. If he gets legal pressure coming down on him you're the easy out for him. "I had no idea he was doing that"

thanks for the suggestion guys, its just not worth it.

Time to let the client go if thats the case...

If I were you and in your situation, I would go after the competitor and hopes they strikes back and tell your client that they striked back and needs more money to recover etc. lol

If it were me, I'd be upfront with the client and tell him that's not how I roll..... If he's really insistent on taking his competitor down, then he's got some insecurity issues not only with his business, but with himself as well. Fire the client.

You might be able to keep your client by telling them that it would be easy for you to take on this project and make money but your professional opinion is that legally and from a business prospective it will cost your client money since anything you do to harm this persons business could be carried out in return and both parties get into an online negative campaign war which will only end badly for all involved and best way to get revenge is for your client to become more successful.

This will do nothing... at all.

No legal recourse if you damaged his search engine position ... lots of legal recourse if you run negative campaigns

Try to get your client to forget about it and move on. Starting a war is a waste of time and doesn't help anything.

Tell him you have something you can try, and it'll cost about $3,000 to get everything set up, and there's only a 50/50 chance it will work.
If he says don't worry about, say 'okay'.
If he says do it, take the money and tell him it didn't work. :D

This probably really isn't worth your time or energy.

In fact, its rather sad that this guy is so hell bent on revenge.
That'll likely be his downfall at some point.

Take the high road and tell the client to go find someone else do to his dirty work.

Why? A past employee stealing all your great ideas and secrets, and opening up as a direct competitor using all the information? Obviously he's going to be mad.

Hearsay :p

Drop this client if he can't be reasoned with on why you don't want to do (legal, moral, etc.) and if he drops you go work for the guy he wants to get back at. You might come out even better working for the other guy since his business is doing so well.
