Clearing up some things about PR and SERP ranking.

Thank you for explaining this, that has helped me a little as I have no interest in selling my site, but very much need my site to rank for certain very specific keywords.

I got this info from "Proweb". He recommended to me that instead of focusing on PR focus instead on:

1) Is the page relevant
2) Is the page indexed
3) Does the page have less than 50 out bound links
4) Are the outbound links pointing to relevant sites (not p0rn, v1agra, or shitty blog comment links)

I use to be on of those noobs thinking it was all about PR as well lol

I had an experience where on one of my websites that I've done no linking the PR went high up (to a PR4) within a 1.5 years. There were no backlinks to the website (the owner wasn't interested in organic seo and only wanted adWords). The website was constantly updated with new content (on a daily basis, on a dozen of pages). So to add up another factor, when I saw that, I actually realized that google seems to have some more ways to determine the PR of a website. For the above mentioned I totally agree. And I thank GreyWolf for details on that.

Nice logical explanation about the correlation of PR and SERP. The two are differently correlated factors on how well the website will appear on internet users. The PageRank represents the value (or the grade) of the website obtain from search engines and SERP is the position of the website in a search engine page result. They were both based on the combination of keywords used.

PR and SERP are not interconnected, Even a PR 0 site dominates Google on First Page, But Google has some value for High PR Sites.

Very good post! I read it over. Very very good. Hope can get contact with you.

really useful . appreciated.
PR is for all backlinks, and SERP is for targeted keyword.

It's been said over and over and over again that the PR of your own site doesn't affect it's position in the SERPs, and yet I still come across people talking about how important PR is for your site.

Since this topic still seems to be so misunderstood, let me give a short explanation of why the PR of your page doesn't matter for ranking in the SERP.

The only reason PR matters for your own site is if you're going to sell advertising space on your site or you plan to sell your site. Those are the only reasons you need to be concerned with the PR of your own pages.

For ranking in the SERPs, the PR of your own page doesn't matter, but the PR of pages you get backlinks from does.
Here's why:
PR is based on the total backlinks a page is getting, but the SERP position is based on how well your site ranks for a particular keyword.

So lets say your website "somedomain.com" has the following backlinks to it:
10,000 for "keyword 1"
10,000 for "keyword 2"
10,000 for "keyword 3"
10,000 for "keyword 4"
10,000 for "keyword 5"

Now the PR will be based on the total 50,000 backlinks, but it's position in the serp for any particular keyword will still be only 10,000 backlinks.

If you create another 50,000 backlinks for "keyword 6" then there will be a postive effect on the PR of the site, which now has a total 100,000 backlinks. But it won't affect it's position in the SERP for keywords 1 thru 5, (although "keyword 6" will now be ranking based on the new 50,000 links).
So that's why the PR of your own site doesn't matter as far as ranking in the SERPs.

But what about the PR of sites you get backlinks from?

Well, higher PR sites carry a little more weight than low PR sites. Lets say that for "keyword 1" you focused on high PR sites to get those backlinks. Now (depending on how many and how high the PR) those 10,000 backlinks on high PR sites will count the same as if you had gotten 30,000 backlinks on low PR sites. So by getting a lot of high PR sites backlinking for "keyword 1", your sites position in the SERP will be improved for that keyword.
To sum it up in short:
  • A page's PR is based on the total amount and quality of all it's backlinks.
  • A page's SERP position is based only on the backlinks targeting a keyword.

:pirate:
(Of course there are other factors affecting your sites position as well, but this explanation is only regarding PR and backlinks.)

Older post that I've never seen before from you Wolf.

Interesting take but I would have to disagree with this one on the point that page rank still matters and not just for the two primary reason you listed.

It is for the number one purpose of creating an authority level business site, not just for advertising or flipping.

Page rank does have to deal with the rank and position of a website over long-term seo, as the level of authority that a site holds in the specific search engine is what determines a longer hold time of a new ranking level when new content is applied.

It looks as though you may have gotten a little more into the seo side of things with the posted and links to the specific keywords in relation to the given site, which is backlinking and falls directly under seo, not under page ranking.

Page ranking is all about the ability to represent information that will maintain a stability in the current position of the website and the level of respected value that content represents from the reputation of that site due to what it post as pure content. It has nothing to do directly with the keywords and the backlink posts related to them, with the exception of the unique quality of the content held by those linked sites in relevant content relation to the site they are linking to with contextual ( one-way ) links.

You have to take into account the primary pagerank comes from the INFORMATION ONSITE far more than the backlinks. Backlinks will boost it for a short time but, pagerank comes from authority and authority comes from the best relevant information possible being given outside of a sales page.

Furthermore, outbound links are just as important and in my personal opinion, even more important, as they represent the fact that your site is a true authority and is all about the targeted niche information and not only about inbound backlinks that lead to better its personal rank and authority position but that of other sites as well in connection.

Thanks for the useful information, but that was lil bit we all already knew :)

i agree with you PR doesn't do the ranking but if you do backlinking your PR will grow automaticlly even with thousand of PR0 backlinks

this is almost the other way compared to how i was understanding it. quite an eye opener... thanks for writing this
