Clearing up some things about PR and SERP ranking.

I always get asked from clients "How do I get a PR 5" and I ask them "Why do you care about PR anyways?" and they always answer me telling me that they think if they have a higher PR they would end up higher in rankings which is obviously not true. There are many penalized sites with PR 5 or even above.

I also agree that PR has value BUT this is not only the important, determining factor to getting ranked. Like others said, you need to consider the number of backlinks and the SEO efforts.

i have seen page with pr 7 and only 7 backlinks totally (acording to alexa) checked the page performance and it had not that much great content or user friendly, is that possible? can someone tell how did they manage to get pr7 with so phew backlinks? i have pr3 with all natural do follow backlinks 41k exactly and never bought backlinks but still stuck at pr3 , all my content in page is original and its 4 years old (if it counts), but not ranking at all on 2 last crawls......

I think that PR and SERP are interrelated somewhere.. PR of a page indicates its importance or trust of Google about this page. If a page has high PR then it means google has more importance or trust on this page so google will surely give it high SERP than lower PR pages.

PR is less effective now, the key to increase SERP is site authority.

Great Info! Cleared things up for me and helped me understand! Thanks!

So, if I read the OP correctly, PageRank matters because the goal is to get links, and the higher the PR of the linking page, the better. It seems you are saying that I shouldn't care what PR my site has, but it is still a measurement of Google's assessment of the importance of the page. My site's overall PageRank is not directly related to its position in the SERPs because a site with more relevant links, but lower PR may outrank me. But in the end, backlinks matter and PR is a measurement of those links. So, if my site was PR1 and now it's PR2, that's a good thing, even if I am not selling links. :)

Hi,

I have a e-commerce website, my site had as pr 5, i do not now why google give it a pr 5, some sub pages also have a pr 4.
So and now what, my site has pr 5 and i can do nothing with it. Thats why i do not care about my pr ranking....

Great post and well described, thanks
