How to checkmate Google in the Post Penguin World:

Step 1: Identify a publicly traded company whose primary profits are derived from online business
Step 2: Find a bunch of nefarious friends with access to Xrumer and Scrabebox
Step 3: Blast site with garbage links for as many days and nights as necessary
Step 4: Wait for the site to be penalized
Step 5: Buy Stock at end of quarterly reports
Step 6: Sell Stock after site recovers and quarterly reports rebound
Step 7: Fuck you Google
Step 8: I'm totally kidding, but seriously... why wouldn't this work if Google really applies it's algo religiously and without compromise?

I honestly don't think this would work, but in theory Google has legitimately created this as a potential money making exploit. Could you imagine getting Amazon deindexed? You might even be able to get away with it, as far as I know it's not illegal to blast links to a site? Maybe it would be construed as insider trading; I'm not certain on that. It would be like Office Space for SEO.

I don't think it is illegal, but i don't think this would work. Webspam is not illegal yet as far as i know, but they can make it illegal anytime and put you in jail, especially if you are in US (US is reaching far these days).

Well negative SEO does work, as many on this forum can probably attest to. Generally speaking, I think the authority sites of publicly traded companies would have such a substantial backlink structure that it would be really, really difficult to sandbox them. But presumably, there is some threshold at which point Google would view the backlink structure as a violation and penalize even those sites. It may take millions of trash backlinks, but let's be honest, a team of 100 smart SEO savvy individuals could accomplish this without asking too much. That's why I'm saying in theory, this should work. Certainly if you managed it the profits you could make would be very, very substantial (assuming the stock could rebound).

I'm all for doing in Google but I think I'd rather have those 100 SeO guys working on a new project. Saves me a lot of time and that is really screwing google.

Of course, i'm not actually advocating anyone do this. In fact, I would actively discourage anyone from doing this because of the profound affect it would have on many innocent stockholder's portfolios. Having said that, this method should point to a systemic issue with Google's algorithm as it stands. It shouldn't be possible, even in theory, to be able to manipulate a company in this way. And yet, now more than ever, negative SEO is a plausible money making method. I really only meant this to be illustrative of a rather tricky problem google has created. But in terms of profit potential, this would take the cake.

buy shitload of high pagerank links
build a shitty and blatantly obvious link network
spend $xx,xxx on sponsored bullshit content

befriend nyt report or cnn reporter show them how this big name company is abusing seo for their benefit (like jc penney)

watch as manual action is taken, and then you win as you mentioned.
