The number that was taken as a valid phone number was a virtual number I had created myself using a free software, but the sms was not being sent. I've now given up as I've spent 10's of hours looking for workable numbers. I'm so so disappointed as it will soon either be saturated or will not be free any more. By saturated I mean the monetization side of it. e.g. using it on Youtube etc.

after registering your account, you go to "deposit" on the "balance" section from the left side and deposit 1usd with a credit card; if you use another payment method it might allow you to spend less, but I haven't tried since it takes a long time

After that, you can go to https://chat.openai.com/auth/login to register your account.
the email name you can put in yours as you want, but the phone number must be valid as you registered(for me is smspool)
after using that phone number, they will send you a verification code like this "712306"
