I've recently started work on a customers SEO.

He was ranking 37 for a not-very competitive niche. Easy I thought....

After looking at his site, EVERY single page (26) has the same TITLE tag set, and DESCRIPTION tag. So, I methodically went through them correctly changing them to sensible, correct length titles and descriptions, each containing the targetted keyword once, so that every page has a now has a unique title and description.

To my horror, 48 hours later the site has gone from 37 to 460!!!

Do you think this could be just a Google Dance, or is it cause for major alarm?

I wouldn't know. But recently I changed title tags of a site of mine, for the content on each page (instead of name of the site - slogan - content) and climbed up a couple of pages in google (not no. 1 yet, though).

Thanks....that makes me feel....erm worse.

I hope so. I cant believe Ive changed a site from having terrible duplicate title tags on EVER page, to having correctly formatted unique title tags....and Google has hammered the site 400 places!!! grrrr

Just moved up to 129.....looks like it may be a Google Dance.

Yeah I would wait a couple days.

Site I am working on, one product page ranked spot 5 for "phrase" I changed the title tag to have "phrase" as the start of the title. Below are the results..

Day 0: 5
Day 1: 12
Day 2: 8
Day 3: 4

Nice, only change to page!

Thats really funny that I came across this post because exactly the same thing happened to me.

I changed my title tag (basically cos it was too long) and bang site dropped.

I'll be interested to see if mine climbs as well.

Note to self - get tag right the first time.

don't worry, it'll get up and up again in days, its NOT a temp move, I believe that most of us have experienced such a thing at least once, take it easy ;)

The iritating thing is that my customer has been employing a crap SEO company, and I've been telling how "they havent set title tags per page" "the descriptions are too long" etc etc. I tell him how great I am and fix it all, then it drops like a bloody brick. I've had to try and explain to the customer about the Google Dance which he is no doubt now Googling!!

I had it once with a $600 a month affiliate site. Changed to title to a two word KW and some minor changes in only the descriptions.

After a day or two, bang. Gone. Place # who gives a f...

Took maybe a month or so to come back, stronger, after also building some targeted backlinks etc. etc...

These days i recheck 10 times my meta's before my site goes 'live'...

i just changed some title tags yesterday. we'll see what happens.

same happen to me it took google over 3 weeks then it came back even higher then where i was so just give it some time

I've done the same for local companies, the site completely dropped but came back about 2 weeks later.
Also you can never be 100% sure it was changing the titles that was the cause, just try and be patient :)

sorry for ask, how can i check my site i recently changed the title.

i wan to see where my site stands on google or to see in what position.

I happen to do the same thing....I dropped...no improvement for 3 days then I looked at crawls they had not been back so I requested a crawl in webmaster tools and BAM 4 positions better! Oh and also I read some where I can't remember to reference too but sometimes takes up to 3 crawls for G to re evaluate the change. Don't know how true that is but hope maybe it helps.
