Cause for concern?

Hey all,

So i've been trying to clear the front page of Google for a client, but their bad press just doesn't seem to go away. I wouldn't be concerned if the negative results were lower down than before, but after a day or so of being on the second page, the bad results return HIGHER than they were before. Should I be concerned? I know of the "Google dance" but it's just been dancing for way too long and I'm getting nervous...

P.S. anyone have any backlinking tips for something like this?

Sounds like negative seo attempts have back fired. Look up online reputation management.
 
How have you been trying to clear the bad press site from the front page? By throwing a load of shitty backlinks at it?

I have done no negative SEO.

EDIT: Actually, the client hired someone before me and they did a ton of negative SEO on the articles. Didn't work well at all.

There's a dance going on but also you could have competitors boosting those bad press articles. Check their links and see if they've been promoted, if so, then you may have a shot at removing them.

I actually focus on article submissions, video sites. There may be a couple of shitty backlinks, I don't think they are hurting me because the site I linked to shows up on the front page as well (from being on the second page).

Both articles are rather old and neither have had backlinks built to them for a while. I do know that there was someone who posted backlinks to the negative articles in an attempt at negative SEO (client hired someone else before me).
 
What's your goal here, to post more positive listings above the negative old links?

So the negative SEO backfired....

Well you need a two sided strategy here, first get some good news in there above the bad, second get the bad news demoted. For the first, I'd go for press releases on large networks and promote those. And for the second strategy well you'll need to do some research about that ;)
 
With ORM nowadays you absolutely have to use very high quality content and links. Here are some quick tips:

1. Only use very high quality content.
2. Do not spin or post the content to more than one or two sites.
3. Only post this high quality content to high pr sites.

Here are some steps to take

Find a list of high pr business directories or citation sites like

yelp
yahoo local
local.com
citysearch
foursquare
G+ Places
and tons more. Just look for a list and you'll find some.

1. Order about 20 to 30 "About Us" style articles as I'm guessing you are cleaning up the business name as a query.
2. Create the accounts on all of these sites manually and optimize them manually. Photos, content, blog posts and whatever else they allow.
3. Start slowly posting reviews to all of these sites. I recommend glowingreviews.com. It's a service provided here on bhw to post the reviews.
4. Build links to each one of these profiles slowly. High quality links only.

That just one step. You'll have about 20 more steps to go!

Other marketing will include
video submissions
photo sharing sites
press releases
guest posting
social networking
free blogs like wordpres.com, blogger.com,etec
self hosted blogs like businessname.com, businessnamegroup.com, businessnameblog.com, businessnamellc.com and so on. I recommend 5 to 10 self hosting blogs as well. You'll need to fill these with relevant content as well.

The trick is to optimize everything you post with back links, content, photos, video, reviews, views, thumbs up an whatever else you can do. But I emphasize high quality. But the citations are probably the most important part as those will always rank for business names.

Today I learned ;)

If he makes enough "positive noise"(pardon me, I'm not the marketing jargon guy ;) ) he'll eventually dilute the power of the bad rep he got in the past. This obviously requires some hard work on his part.
 
thanks for the tips! Unfortunately for me, the query I want to clear up is a name. I've been doing most of what you have suggested and it's taking so long. Probably just need to keep plugging away...I don't suppose you have any tips regarding people's names? If not, thanks for the tips again!

Names are almost the same. You can still do much of the same stuff.

Self hosted blogs

janesmith.com
janesmithblog.com

You can make up fake companies too!

janesmithenterprises.com
janesmithrealestate.com

I would try to put these blogs/websites on separate hosting accounts so they have different IP's. You can also make up addresses for these fake company names and post them all over directories as well. But he/she does have a real business you may want to be careful with that. When I did I just found a large building that had a lot of suites and made up a suite and used the building address.

You can also do tons of fake social accounts. I mean tons!

Another tactic I use for names is this

Get some very high quality article written. Then find high pr places to post them and post them with titles like this
Jane Smith: Article Title Here
Article Title Here By Jane Smith
Jane Smith On How To Blah Blah Blah

I really just need to start a blog and put all this sh*t in it.. LOL.
 
I would suggest that you purchase a Reputation Management service. There's plenty of good service for this in the BST section so I'd suggest that you take a look there and I'm sure you'll find a service that will offer what you're looking for. I hope this helps!
