Case Study: Testing the effects of excessive backlinking

Hey awesome thread.

I decided to do a small contribution and run a small linkwheel blast with Linkwheel Bandit. I see a lot of Scrapebox/Xrumer type links already so I figured I'd do some web 2.0 properties.

I'll leave your linkwheel running in the software a while in case any of the properties die out. The software will automatically heal them by creating a new web 2.0 property in its place.

I attached a .txt file with the some of the links and I'll PM you the report that has all the login credentials, etc.

Awesome thread and I hope your site eventually makes its way to the top!

Thanks S4nt0s, that's very kind of you.

I also believe that to be true - I normally don't use more than 3 main keywords and of course stress one.

I've found out that it was like that when I completely changed the structure of my rather large website and watched the different keyword rankings going all over the table and different inside pages showing up for different keywords.
Actually it's still going on.

Do you have any evidence of experience of this first hand?

I'm genuinely interested in how you came to find out that this could be true. I'd like to see some evidence if possible, even if it is just your own experience.

No problem at all. I enjoy when people have these kind of case studies because it helps the community learn not to always listen to the rumors they hear on the net. Doing something like this lets us see if the site is gonna get "penalized" for a long time or head to the top and stick.

Are you using just one url (index page) or do you point it to inner pages as well?

Everytime i spam links to my sites, the site goes down. Sometimes even -300 or more positions, however after 7 days it starts to climb back up and most of the time outranks it's original position.

I've also notived, that when i do massive blasts (20k links sb/xrumer/vseo) and i use around 50 - 100 related kws the site is moving up slowly, i don't see any hardcore drop in rankings.

Wow, the "hemorrhoid treatments" is 899 and "hemorrhoid symptoms" is 69 and yahoo shows...1 link????? wtf? That was without www. with www it's 4,010

I think i've misinterpreted what has been happening.

I thought that when the keyword dropped and the page that is being displayed in the results changed, it was because Google didn't know which page to rank. But i've realized that actually, Google is refusing to rank the homepage(the page that was blasted), which is why other pages are being displayed instead.

I think this makes more sense. It is just a waiting game now to see if it comes back.

Update:

Linkbuilding has been going strong. Had some donations from very nice people here, including linkwheels, scrapebox blasts and web 2.0s.

I also ran another free AA list which gave about 10k backlinks verified.

Somethign new has now happened. The homepage is now showing up again for keyword. Remember, previously, it was as if Google had removed the homepage and refused to let it rank. Well now it has reappeared ins earch results, however, it is currently around the 800+ position for both "hemorrhoid symptoms" and "hemorrhoid treatments".

Just checked it and in general index the "hemorrhoid symptoms" is 326 and "hemorrhoid treatments" is 36, so something is happening.
In US index they're not in the first thou...

I wonder what it means. Did you target a specific market? I see that you are in the UK.

It will be interesting to see if Google will rank your home page well via back-links for your target keyword "hemorrhoid symptoms" than the content which is far from the fact. if that is not the case two weeks from now I wont be surprised if your inner pages will rank first second spots and home page 300 - 400 position. Nice

The site is untargeted in webmaster tools. I use google.com/ncr (no location) to check results.

I'm not sure how long this drop in rankings will last or if it will even come back up.

Time will tell. I hope it does though!

I just created another 650+ scrapebox backlinks, all from unique domains. Nearly finished checking links.

if people went to your site and stayed, looked around a bit then it would rank better.

Tracking crawler traffic from inbound linking (direct and indirect) is vastly more important than link count. Everything else is just educational at best.... I suppose that was the point of the case study, but you could have just asked.

Well there are a lot of opinions about and not enough people back them up. So I want to find out properly.

Maybe you could make a case study about tracking crawler traffic? I've not really heard of crawler traffic as being vastly more important than the amount of backlinks. I'd like to see some evidence of it.

/hemorrhoids-symptoms looks stronger out of all 4 pages that are within index range. The second strongest page by date is the home page but still doesn't show major advancements in the index - still early days. Nice work gorang

Update:

The two keywords rankings dropped into oblivion on the 1st of July, it is now the 3rd of August and they are still in oblivion. Hemorrhoid treatments is currently 900+ and hemorrhoid symptoms is 700+.

So up to now, the case study is proving that you CAN destroy a site's ranking through excessive backlinking.

However, Google is slow on making changes, so i'm going to keep watching the site over the next 5 months to see if the keywords eventually do come back.

On the upside, the site is now ranking for it's domain keyword again "hemorrhoid treatment cream"

It went messing for this keyword for some time. So the fact that it is back could be a good sign.
