After wasting my whole day on reddit yesterday (here's the thread), I decided to do something useful with what I learned.
So I decided to test the effectiveness of those D0Follow links on Reddit.

Where i start (it's an EMD domain and not .com):
keyword1: position 25
keyword2: position 46

Created 5 d0follow backlinks on reddit and maybe, will add 5 more in a week's time.
The link is contentual and there's a unique article as a post so there's content around the link.

I'm also adding comments on niche relevant subreddits so reddit link juice flows to my profile and then to my subreddits. The comments are real and relevant to make sure I avoid downvotes.

I know, it's not perfect but I'm very curious to see if those links will have any effect. I understand it that i'm using my test site and there are many variables in play so even if the rankings don't move an inch it's not necessarily because of the links but maybe because of the domain. Depanding on how it goes I might test them again on one of my parasites.

I think, that's it, folks. Any suggestions are appreciated.

PS: to admins, sorry if I posted the thread in the wrong category.

Where did you post these links (in a post, comment or sidebar)?

@Razen666 and I did this before, but on a much larger scale (We're talking 100's of links)

It was quite a flawed case study as the links we made were pretty spammy. I think if we stuck with quality we could've seen much better results.

If I remember correctly the positions did start moving up but as it always is with google, they began to fluctuate again. @Razen666 let me know if I'm remembering correctly :)

There were a lot of things we got wrong and I'm going to be doing a case study on the effectiveness of Reddit links soon myself.

But you should know, I mainly see Reddit links as being good for diversity. However, if done right they can have quite an impact, at least in my personal experience (not a very detailed experience though :D)

Siderbar as they are d0follow and I hope the link juice from my comments will flow to my profile and then to my subreddits.

First of all, thanks for the share.
Damn, how did I miss it? I've been wordering about reddit links for some time. They are easy to make and as you correctly said are great for diversity and maybe I'll get a few odd visitors.
It's an EMD domain ffs, so I don't think I'd need 100's of links... and if 10 links move it then I'm going in the right direction.

I love case studies. I did a blog comment one recently which I found very interesting. I'll be following :-)

They are indeed good.

I love case studies as well.
Could you please point me to your blog comment case study?

Maybe I can chime in with some of my personal results.

I have a site with just content. No links, just on-page optimization! It's about 4-5 months old.

A a couple of weeks ago, I answered a question on Reddit and inserted a link to an article on my website. I was already tracking the keywords for this blog and were nowhere to be seen on Big G.

I saw this week that the link with the anchor showed up in GSC and out of all the article on this site, the one with the link from Reddit is sitting on Page 2 (11th position) - Now this is a low difficulty keyword, but it goes to show that a link from Reddit has value. Keep in mind there are 0 links to this blog and 99% of my tracked keywords are still AWOL.

EDIT: I also edited a Sub-Reddit wiki and inserted another link to another article this week. It hasn't been picked up by Google and the Article is still not ranking. Once it shows up in GSC, I'll report back with the results.

Sorry for hijacking your thread! :)

Thank you for your feedback... I'm glad to hear from people.
One thing to notice... when you post a reply, your link is n0follow on reddit but today I built 5 D0follow backlinks from reddit and left some comments so more link juice flows to my profile and then to my subreddits and then to my site.

I did about 7-8 links from 'buttons' section (do-follow) and sidebar (no-follow). All had exact keyword and almost exact kw.
2 or 3 days later I saw a little jump on that keyword. From #80 to #60.
All subs were niche related.

That sounds promising... hopefully, I see a bit of a boost as well.
I'm using a test domain so it might be tough.

One question... how did you get n0follow links from the sidebar?
I'm using sidebar links but they are D0follow.

Buttons on sidebar.
Code:

Without trying to be a dick, it's a flawed case study as you have nothing to compare to.

  1. If the rankings go up, how do you know they went up because of the reddit links and not for other reasons and natural increase in rankings?
  2. If the rankings stay the same, how do you know that they wouldn't of gone up if you hadn't added reddit links?
There's to many variables and no controlled data set.
Ideally you'd need multiple new domains with identical onpage trying to rank for a random made up phrase, like "hikkle pukka odarch". Fill one page on each new domain with unique lorem ipsum and add the key phrase to the h1, first paragraph and one h2.
I'd suggest 3 domains for this.
One domain gets the reddit link. One gets no link and one gets another type of link from a comparable source.
Wait some time and see who ranks first and highest.

2 points here:
1. I explicitly stated that it was not going to be a pefect case study as there are too many variables in play.
2. This domain gets nothing natural so no new links or content will influence the case study.
What I want to see here if the site ranking actually moves with these links. It's just a small test to see what happens. I don't work for google so I don't have their data LOL.

I get that. But, if you see movement, it's not going to prove anything. It might have been the reddit links, it might not have, you have no way of telling.
I'm not trying to be an arse about, simply pointing out that it's not going to tell you the information you want.

Following this up...

Heck might buy a Reddit package from BST section too.

keyword #1 has held position 25-26 for many months. So why all of a sudden would it move? Only because of the new reddit links.

Where i start (it's an EMD domain and not .com):
keyword1: position 25
keyword2: position 46

Created 5 d0follow backlinks on reddit and maybe, will add 5 more in a week's time.

following, thanks for doing this
