You definitely need money to rank in the long term. What some people do to avoid investing too much when they’re just getting started is target very long tail keywords. Lots of them.

Sure, search "brain dean guest posting" method. I follow this method and they hired a VA, taught the entire method, and he started building 10-20 links each month. His only job was to find prospects and email them.

If you don't mind me asking, how are you monetizing those directory websites? with ads or another source of income?
 
Guest blogging as an SEO strategy is extremely effective. Not only does creating guest content on other sites help your SEO, it also exposes your content/brand to a new audience as well as providing back-links to your website.
 
Yes, it is possible with low competition keywords. But guest posts can help in gaining potential traffic and reach a new set of audience

It doesn't sound realistic at all if you don't write continuously new content. Probably feasible if you brand yourself. For my personal experience, hard to find free guest posts opportunities these days.
