I've avoided the YouTube game, but with this new generation havibg the attention of fleas and seeming to spend hours just watching videos it seems I must get some knowledge and begin.

I have zero camera equipment nor a webcam or microphone. Never needed it, so don't have it. (I don't even have wifi at home, just phone data, and have made money with IM)

So my question is, can I get by with an S10 phone camera for the first year of dappling with YouTube?

Edit: I do use a laptop, just no webcam on it.

short answer no
why not? if they can create engaging content. many people do personable webcam videos talking about stuff. you could easily run say a cooking channel just using your phone. mobile editing is a lot more advanced than it was a while ago, but obviously no where near as useful as desktop. so i don't see why not if OP can create high quality content and create an audience that cares about them, but it would ofc require a lot of work.

I thought we are aiming high here. Music videos and millions of views at least.

not everyone needs to aim high. it sounds OP might be from a NEE, so any amount of income would be substantially more substantial to them. any side / passive income is good income.

Guess it depends what you are going to niche down to.
I know a young lady who just uses a very grainy mobile phone camera and is making bank big time with what she films.
Mostly boring stuff around her camp that people seem to find fascinating.
Um - just saying.

What is NEE?

I am aiming for 5 figures in next year or so, video isn't required but might be helpful for reaching more folks. SEO works great in this niche, so I've ignored video. Though new competitors to niche are younger and starting to use more video.

Their is lots of videos on YouTube made with phone camera
But are they successful, or just exist?

I honestly have avoided video completely for more useful methods that have brought income with minimal traffic. So am starting from complete scratch here (don't even watch much myself, with exception of odd comedian to perk up a shit day)

Alright, alright. I get it.

You can earn more than many youtubers by just commenting about things happening

But obviously, you have to be sharp, plastic (explain like am 5), without bs and long intros (speaking about nothing or making story long)

Specific fast quick, right in the center, making point, why someone done something or etc

Try and see if you can swim there, you won't need any views, yt skills, thumbnails

YT itself will push you because high (nvm if low number of views, likes vs dislikes) engagement, and yt voice script that will suggest you near subjects you talk about in your videos.

Im only using huawei y9s in my official artist channel. making $$$ is still great.
The most important in youtube is your audio quality.

You can be successful with anything. Even with no camera. You have guys that all you know from them is a the voice. So you can. Doesn't mean you will. But it's not because of the lack of camera. It's because being successful on YT is as likely as being successful in movies. If tomorrow you go buy the best camera available in the market, you will most likely still fail as fast as you would fail without a good camera.

Well an Indian youtuber with more than 20M subscribers made it just using a phone camera and his skills. He still uses his phone to shoot his videos. The same phone he started with.
So why not.

You still need to edit videos to create something good.
