Can someone please explain how Facebook read my mind? This one is too specific .

So yesterday I was walking through Walmart pickup up some groceries. I randomly thought of a person that I used to work with over 10 years ago in a city over 24 hours away via car. I worked with this person in the army and I was alone and thought of them , never said their name out loud. No one that I know now even knows this person . We both work in unrelated fields now and have never one spoken in the last 10+ years , nor were we ever Facebook friends.

Fast forward to 10 minutes ago and she randomly pops up in my “people you may know” feed as the first suggestion.

How does this happen and how is it possible?

I’m briefly familiar with the Facebook algorithms that track everything you do and where you go , etc and recommend products and pages for you based on people with similar characteristics and habits as you. BUT, This is way too specific this time and I feel is indescribable without blatant mind reading SOMEONE PLEASE HELP IT MAKE SINCE TO ME . lol

I would say this is pure happenstance. For you said yourself that you and your friend had worked in unrelated fields which means the Facebook's algorithm could not have suggest this friend to you. I am however of the opinion that the universe reached out and sorted that out for you and not facebook. Sometimes, you may even have had someone as a facebook friend and something separated you. If you want to get this person back on facebook, even searching for them does not make the algorithm bring them to you. In your case, your path with your friend needed to cross again in your journey of life.
 
You can't predict anything. Based on what you've said, you and that person haven't communicated in over 10 years and work in different fields. Even if you don't have any mutual friends, the suggestion to you could be a coincidence. It's possible that everyone has something in common; this probability is low, but not impossible. You need to experiment with one or three more cases. If the frequency remains the same, then it's suspicious.

this is definitely going to make me stop for a second . i must be something hidden within their data system but that it occured just after i thought of her is really creepy.
 
Go and have a look online. They actually have a technology where they "read your mind" but from your throat. When you think, its like talking with your mouth closed. The words are still being verbalised you just can't hear them wirh your ears...but a very powerful microphone can pick it up. Go look for yourself idk how to explain it
 
The targeting can definitely feel surprisingly accurate. Usually it’s a combination of signals such as pages you interact with, searches, browsing activity, location and patterns from similar users. It can look like mind-reading when several signals line up at once.
 
I have seen this happen too. I’m not sure how Facebook does it, but sometimes the posts and ads are so close to what I was thinking about. Has anyone else noticed this?
 
lol that would freak me out too. I usually assume there’s some data connection behind it, but this sounds really specific.
 
Is it not possible she was searching for you on Facebook, your minds were connected, and nothing is unbelievable like the power of the mind.

Creepy coincidence but facebook can connect old networks in ways we never notice

This could be a coincidence. It is happened to me also.
 
Sometimes it's a bit superstitious, but coincidences are quite possible. I've experienced this myself, not just once, but quite a few times. When you think of something, a little while later you scroll and you see it appear on the screen.
 
sometimes the timing makes an ordinary recommendation feel way more mysterious than it actually is

It usually boils down to two things: confirmation bias and subtle background tracking. You probably passed by her profile or saw someone connected to her on another app/platform without realizing it, which subconsciously made you think of her. At the same time, Facebook's algorithm constantly cross-references phone contacts, shared IP addresses, and location proximity from years ago."
