I hope it's ok that I am posting this, but I lost some reputation for my post in this thread earlier: http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackhat-seo/blackhat-lounge/460296-omg-taking-math-quiz-right-now.html

I was just posting on my opinion so losing rep feels a bit unnecessary. I feel like I should be able to post my opinions in the lounge without losing rep. They gave me negative rep because they said that I didn't value education enough. Is there anything I can do about it or should I just deal with it? Again, it isn't necessarily the rep that I lost that made me mad, but the fact that I lost it for just posting my opinion in the lounge. What do you guys think? Was I at fault?

-thanks for your input

But on the serious side, take reps lightly, man...
Sometimes you get de-rep for the most stupid reasons.

For example, in the downloads section there was a thread about Traffic Travis. Someone tried to post his affiliate link (which is against the rules) and I sarcastically replied, "Nice affiliate link, buddy".
Guess what? I was neg-repped by someone with the comment, "Buy it".

WTF?

That's just one of them. There were many cases where I was de-rep for nothing. Still, take it easy... just treat it as a mosquito bite. lol

Not sure why anyone would do that. Obviously they're making soooo much money that they have nothing else to do but that. But, yeah its not that big of a deal other than it just being a jack ass move. I guess you could return the favor and state that they value education too much.

I gotcha. I have been registered on here for a while and I just started trying to contribute the best that I can lately since I am on summer break from college and I have the time. I know that BHW is something that could be very helpful for my future so my reputation on it is something that I am trying to build up. I guess that is why I took it so hard. Thanks for your insight, though. Insight like yours is why I love this place.

I've had it happen on other forums before for stupid reasons, political differences or just different points of view. Its not worth worrying about.

I remember when I finished my major at college. A few years after I graduated I told my former supervisor what my major was, and he told me I had wasted my time. I remember stressing out over tests and all of the other grief I went through trying to graduate. When he told me I had wasted my time, I was a little unhappy. The irony was that in my case he was right . . . .

I've been on minus 20 before just got to take it on the chin.
People will fuck with you especially now they see you care.
Don't be surprised if you end up in minus territory by the end of this thread now.

I was gonna say the same thing. oxonbeef beat me to it. But don't worry about rep, if you have decent posts, you will get it back :)

Don't post things (even if you're doing it to help someone) if someone will take it the wrong way. These forums are full of very sensitive people that don't take kindly to even kindly presented conflicting viewpoints. At least for me they've just assumed I was trying to disparage them.

The irony was that in my case he was right . . . .

No, he wasn't.

The advancement of a society is directly proportional to the access of education of members of that society. Even education where you learn something that has no practical application has value - it encourages independent thought. Look at two extremes on this planet - Afghanistan and Denmark. In Afghanistan, education (especially for girls) is actively 'discouraged'. This is hardly a tolerant and enlightened society right now. In clear contrast we have Denmark where tertiary education is very cheap and it has one of the highest participation rates in the world.

Now for those who say you can't compare those two countries, take India instead. There is a lot of pressure on birth rates in that country. Do you know what they are finding to be one of the best birth control methods for teenagers in this country, especially in poorer communities? A good education. Education women instead of having them get married and knocked up barely out of their teens is slowing birth rates. Instead of popping out 8 children by their late 20's, these girls are staying in school longer, marrying later and having far less children.

So was your education a waste of time? No. Do you have a college debt to match it? Probably, if you live in the US. But don't let the anchor of that debt weight down the intrinsic value of learning.
