i have visited the site and discovered that the site is a very shitty site without SSL. you can't even read read the articles in question because everywhere is just choked with google ads. i keep wondering why that site ranks above sites with better stats

Apart from the suggestions made in previous comments - This site might be involved in getting fake search traffic to their website.
Google mentioned somewhere that it ranks websites higher, if that particular page is getting high search traffic. Google makes this judjement based on probability that since the page is receiving traffic, it is "valuable" and that's why it is ranked higher.

however, this is very dangerous technique - as once Google finds it out, it penalizes the site and then it is much more difficult to getting ranked on first 2-3 pages in nearby future.

I totally understand that it is very much difficult to talk and convince client on this totally "unknown" algorithm changes. Especially, when we worked for 3-4 months, alrady charged clients for efforts in high ranking, our all SEO metrics from Ahrefs, MoZ, Alexa, SEMRush are better than them, however, some sites are just getting ranked higher.

This is not like maths where 2+2 = 4 or a a JS code where we write console.log("Hello World"); and it gets the output Hello World.

It is what it is. Client gonna p*** and we can't do anything in this.

Better to show Search Console stats to client, and pitch on technical SEO factors.

So you're advising against buying traffics? Is buying traffics not Blackhat?

Ranking depends on many factors like backlink, content, user engagement, quality traffic, on-page and so on. Those stats don't have impact on ranking.
