Can A Pro Programmer/developer Answer This Question?

Hi there,

I was wondering how much it would cost to build and maintain a movie streaming site like Netflix or crackle?


Your answer should take into account- hosting costs, costs to hire a programmer, time it will take, maintenance costs, e.t.c

Not a programmer or developer but I imagine you would need a team of people and a few hundred thousand dollars if you were looking to take on Netflix.
If you were just looking to start a streaming site then there are cheaper options.
 
Only a few thousand to make and host a site like that but your video streaming and marketing budget would prob have to be in the hundreds of thousands. To have any dent in the market. Unless you are doing illegal streams but that is a lot of work. You will keep having to find people to host your vids after they get removed. I have tried something similar using webtorrents but even that uses a lot of CPU as every files needs its own CPU process.
 
A site like Netflix? A streaming site that was developed and is constantly maintained by teams of developers? For obvious reasons, the cost would be incredible.

For a "normal" quality streaming site, it's really difficult to say. Just speculating of course, hiring a solo programmer to build his/her version of a quality streaming site, if he/she is worth his/her salt and assuming it takes him/her 3-6 months at least, could cost anywhere from $30k-$100k.
 
I am not a developer nor am a I Programmer.

I met somebody one day who thought he could be the next Netflix (That was weird to type) - he put over half a million into the project and ran out of money.

IIRC he blew a chunk on a failed advertising campaign.

I'm not looking to take on netflix. But I do want to build a streaming site that mirrors the design of Netflix.

@Asif WILSON Khan What are the 'cheaper options'? please elaborate...
 
How much will it cost to hire a dedicated team to build/maintain the site?

Budget is $10,000.

I just consulted with a programmer outside America who says that's how much his team will charge.

I don't believe that'll be enough for a fully functioning, slick looking site.

Just out of interest - did you tell them your budget first and then they gave you that quote?
If so, I'm almost certain they will not stick to it.

If you are really interested in doing this and are looking for professionals you should find a registered company that does proper contracting work.

Then you can send them a RFI and they will send you all the details of the project including a quote and how long it will take. A project of such a scale wont be cheap and my estimated minimum price is 30k for everything.

The best part is with the price it is also included IT services, meaning they will help you with maintanace and any inquiries you might have (just make sure this is included in the contract).

Depending on what company you work with and how they tacle projects they will work very closly with you and include you in lots of phases in the development process.

I think you are ready to be scammed.

Such big plan is literally means failure, sorry but its truth, I presume you have no knowledge of this field, you just have a big Goal, thats cool, but not even near enough, its far far away from it.

Instead, I suggest you learn the basic, build a site, try to do thing yourself, at least learn how it works, whats the pattern of it, and then make a detailed plan.

To tell the truth, wanna be another Netflix only means you will fail.
 
You don't have to start from scratch... There are companies like stremhash that a good looking Netflix clone

Cheaper option would be buying a streaming theme for WP and then hosting videos on a CDN or something like OpenLoad then embedding the videos on your site.

No, I did not.
In your opinion, how much do you estimate it will cost?

I'm not looking to be the next netflix.

I'm enquiring about the cost of building a streaming site that looks as nice as netflix.
