buying vps, no idea how to set up? :(

hey.

so i'm buying a vps from bermanhosting

in the configure server setting. it is asking for "host name" and "root password"

i was wondering what these are, how to find them, and what i should put in those fields.

If you are planning to run a site on it then host name would be site name.
If you are planning to run tools just put in a title/word that you will remember.
It is not that important, it is just to differentiate between different sites/services in your account area.
You will probably be using RDP to connect to the VPS, so you only need to note down the IP address and remember the password.

If you get stuck, Berman have a live chat feature and they usually respond quickly.
 
I used someone on Fiverr to set mine up, as it seemed more trouble than it was worth.

Host name = VPS Host Name (eg. yourdomain etc.)
root password = A password that you want for root user of your VPS.

However, you can also contact your hosting provider in Live chat..
 
It's risky managing your own VPS or dedicated machine (regardless of the OS) without any knowledge.
Even if you get your system set up by someone, it still needs regular updates / maintenance / backups, sooner or later you will encounter incompatibilities between your scripts and updated software (if you're hosting php content for example).

It would probably be best if you found a managed offer or webspace.

The best and safest way to learn linux is getting a vmware or virtualbox image of ubuntu and playing around with it on your home pc first.

My personal experience with Bermanhosting !

I purchased my VPS plan from them and had no idea how to set that up . I contacted them via live chat and that guy told me that they cannot help me with the configuration and setup. So what i did was made some search on google and then in youtube. until i found a video where a guy taught about setting up VPS for senuke or something.

To do that in windows 7 and 8 ... you need to go to remote connection and then enter the details. The IP in the computer name ..... username is most of the time "administrator" and the password ! And you are connected !

Kick the one who started this thread if i am wrong
 
Bro, if it's just a windows based VPS you'll be using to run SEO tools on, just put anything into the fields, it does not matter. They'll send you an ip and password and you just remote from your windows machine using admin + password given to you. Easy as cake.

If, on the other hand, you're setting up a Linux based webserver...... good luck :)
 
After all been said, i don't think anyone has given a really good suggestion to that answers the question...am also interested in your answers
