According to SEOmoz, the most relevant factor when determining value of a link is Page Authority which is mostly based on the amount of backlinks pointing to a main backlink which is pointing to your money site.

I've done some research and I've noticed a lot of xrumerers building links to their profile links and then linking out to their money sites from those profile links.

What are your opinions on this? Is it worth building backlinks to backlinks for increasing value of your main backlinks?

yeah you should definately do that. The more backlinks you get to pages pointing to your site the more value those pages will have. It's also a lot more like how sites get linked to each other when the backlinking is all organic.

You can read this thread, SEO - Understanding the Simulation, to get a better understanding of why that's the case.

Not sure I would beef up my profile links as a general rule though. Way to easy for a profile to be deleted and then all that linking goes to waste. Setup a few blogs of your own, articles on ezine etc. You want to make sure that the pages you build up are going to stick around.

backlinking to a profile page is good if and only if you are facing problem in the profile indexing.

Having said that, building backlinks to a backlinks work really good to increase your serp but not to profile page. Instead build backlinks to your article in article directory or to a blog which is linking to a money website

Definately a good point. You do want to be somewhat selective about which of your backlinks your going to start secondary backlinking campaigns for. Profile Links and Blog Comments aren't really worth wasting time with for backlinking to. Articles, guest blog posts, and creating additional blogs and websites with related content and backlinks to your primary domain are the best. Maybe a few really good profiles, but only ones that you take care of so that they don't get deleted.

I think a better strategy is to focus on getting diverse links, including articles, social bookmarking, forum posts and forum profiles.

You're nuts to NOT build backlinks to your web 2.0 sites, articles, blogs and such.

Absolutely nuts!

You did the work to build the initial backlink, give it some juice so it gives your money site juice.

I have heard it is important to create these multiple accounts using unique IP addresses so that they aren't recognized as ONE USER.

I use Hide My Ass dotcom - it works for about 50% of the sites I've tried opening. Some don't work - not sure why exactly - but they just don't.
