Build Links to Root Domain or Blog Posts?

Hi all, before I go on a spending spree I'd like to know something......
does building links to the root domain increase the overall authority of the website or does building links to blog posts?
Or does it matter?
I'm trying to increase my DA (or DR Ahrefs)

My competition is outranking me and I've noticed their DA has increased to nearly double mine :eek:

Dunno DA has nothing to do with it...

Ahrefs has our site at 28 and 12

Competitor is 65 and 65.. (they are also 100m company)

I outrank them for many terms, many of which we compete on.. I don't think in this day in age to be honest ranking to the root is the way to go it's a strategy I've dropped for the last 2-3 years. In fact only links I have to the root are in passing if someone links the brand name i.e

<a href="domain">brand name</a>

The rest of the time it's just not natural or worth it your just giving a user an extra click to get to what they need.

If you saw an article on a topic you took interested in and it got shared online would you:

1. Rather click the link and go directly to the article

OR

2. Click the link. Go to Home. Have to click Blog. Have to scroll to find topic and click. Wait for page to load.
 
The Google rankings are irrelevant to the actual DR DA TF or any other metric
 
OK here's what's happened....I was in position #3 for my keywords and now I've moved down to position 4. Doesn't sound like such a big deal but it is in affiliate sales. The only thing I can see different it my competitor is they have increased the DR of their site. It might not be anything to do with that....I'm just guessing really.

I outranked all these guys with virtually no links! Just tons of content.

Wouldn't be surprised if a major update is coming as a cherry on top of 2020 :D

Could be small updates or changes... are you checking the results in the serps via browser or a tracker? There are about 4 different page designs on the go at the moment (in terms of layout changes from what I've noticed) I can see and positions are average between them.

That aside.

You mentioned virtually no links.. the ones you do have have they suffered at all or anything effected them or you have not lost any that you got?

Whats the exit / bounce been like has that increased at last few weeks? No tweaks or changes to your competitor?

Theres tons of little things that go to making up the bigger picture really so I try not to jump on the bandwagon of its big Gs fault until I can rule our a few things from a go to checklist..

Fingers crossed it's a fix you can apply. Worst case G has bumped you down a slot for the moment..

I still have the few links I bought months ago and they seem fine. As you said it could be anything really....
 
Both can increase overall authority. Internal linking structure plays a big role.

Pointing links to homepage is my preferred way of growing it.

if the DA of your competitor increased they might just have built more links.
so try to do the same, add more links as thats the only way to increase DA.
however as others already mentioned all these metrics mean nothing, but links do of course, so if the DA increased its an indicator of more links that have been added.

Yes that's what I suspected....I can't see anything noticeable on page....

Maybe it was just the update shuffling positions.....
 
it depends how big your site is. If you have good articles than even more links should go to them comparing to homepage.

Buddy, Depends upon your type of link strategy and type of your website architecture.
 
Root domain links are my preference... but the blog post links would also prove to be equally effective. Internal linking plays a great role in it.

It's far better to build links your strong links to inner pages.

Your topical authority comes from your inner pages. When you build links to those inner pages you bolster that topical authority and juice flows all around your site, especially when you've either silo'd, or you have a good internal linking structure.

Building links to the homepage was more effective in 2016-2018, but topical authority has become a HUGE factor in ranking since late 2018.

You remember all those generic review sites that used to dominate? Ever see them now? Nope. What do you see now? Lots of macro niche sites. Sites focused on a single broad topic. They will outrank much more powerful sites because they have more topical authority in their niche.

And it's for this reason that inner page links work better now. 2016-2017 was more just about pure link juice, so sending to the homepage where it would flow everywhere was always best.

Also, penguin seems to be a LOT more relaxed these days. I'm convinced they have dialed it down. While you can't go crazy with your exacts, you can be more aggressive than you could in the past. In 2017 I was recommending zero exacts, now I recommend the odd few exacts or partials mixed in with your target/lsi and I'm seeing exceptional results from the more aggressive anchors.
