The domain had great stats (DA/TF), and I searched myself on web archive for suspicious content. I also checked with a couple of tools its backlinks to be sure it was clean.

    Everything was fine!

I have created and published some content, but today I realized that the domain is penalized!

I have the option to request a review and thinking about adding more valuable content, take some backlinks and continue sharing on social media. After that, I will ask for a review.

    Is it worth my time?

I think it was auctioned or was traded to a user for a small amount of time and the user took advantage of it then spammed the heck out of it.
It's best to just move on really but since you have the option to request a review and you have published content in it.
Then take google on their offer.

May be It should work, Try adding fresh contents (You've already added few) and make your site up. I dont think back links are necessary to send a review request to Google. It wont be a waste of big time, but Its going to be luck If Google removes the manual action. All the best.

oh lol i had thin content or content with no value/affilate thin pages penalty but recovered after i changed the site topic (and design). not sure about the "pure spam" but if you can send a reconsideration request then go on.

    ps DA is useless.

you can also write your quality content and set site to noindex > then if they approve you can change it to index, if they dont then you copy your content to new domain and have no problem with duplicate content issues

Not worth spending time on this spammy domain name. Just throw it away.

What about the review request option? If I add valuable content and a couple of social media pages (facebook, twitter). Do I have any luck?

I had two domains with same message in GWT and I submitted the reconsideration request after I had put a legit website with good content on it. Google removed the penalty and both sites are indexed again. Do you think the domains still hold the backlink value, or at this point google could have disavowed everything the domain had to this point? Going to use them for PBN

I think it's not worth to lose your time on it but if you really want to do something you can clean the backlinks profile and as google suggest "request reviews" wait few weeks before submitting any review and it will not work at 100% so you will probably lose the domain at the end but it will give you an experience in return.

You make me feel better! I had same experience in the past with an other site. I managed to fix the issue. I am not sure about this time.

How can I check it? I bought it for its backlinks.

Rule of thumb for any newbie who is trying to scrape domains or register them by himself - If the metrics look "great", then the domain is penalized. End of story. 2 - 3 years ago you may have had a chance to find something decent. With a limited operation, you won't find anything usable these days.

Checking archive.org is absolutely insufficient, plus you do not even know what you are looking for there. Plus "Checking with couple of tools", well, I would love to see one tool that would tell me if the domain is penalized or not. It would save me 8 hours of work a day :)

Bottom line. Domain is penalized, it's damaged goods and you learned the hard way and wasted money. Turn off auto renew and forget it.

Sometimes it's worth to get few deindexed along the way to save 8 hours of work a day...
