A 500 words article should be ideal for a normal blog post. If you have something extra than you can make it up to 2000 words. Remember more words doesn't mean that your article is full of information and it is useful to users. Sometimes long article bore your readers.

Recent study i saw showed that a large majority, like 70% of top page results have 1,800 words or more. So long content does way better with Google's newest system.
 
I personally like to mix It up. Some are longer then others if I have more to say.

Best Blog length is should be 700-800 words not more than that.
But if you are writing more than that, you have to use relevant, original and updated contents always.
