I used to love Magic Hat Blog Network... I got stellar results in the beginning. Now it doesn't even move any of the keywords I throw at it... Not even top 100. I hate to say it, but I think this network is totally dead. A bunch of my sites that used it also got slapped like a B***h.
* Please note: I really like the owner of MH Private Blog Network, he's a cool guy, I just think his network got hit super hard.

Hosting:
Most believe if they have separate nameservers and separate IP's all would be fine.
Unless you have very large segment of hosting providers, your blog network is just a sitting duck.
Content:
Why in the world would you accept spun content after spending thousands of dollars on your online real estate. That is a huge contributing factor to blog network just vanishing from the serps.
How Google Finds Blog Networks:
Nowadays, the biggest snitches are your competitors. Google is getting tons of reports from sites you're out ranking and they now have enough people to look closely at sites with questionable links.
How a blog network can remain good and hidden:
1- article posting must be one article for only one blog
2 - articles must be reviewed and doubled checked
3- membership must be limited and well priced
Conclusion:
Blog networks is an effective method to rank your site. Finding a good network is hard and the really good ones are built for private use of SEO firms.
If your site is well setup and has unique readable content, then your links in the network would not get your site deindexed.

Look we have a private blog network which we built from the ground up. All of the content we post is written by writers whom have written for actual newspapers and other media, so the content is written at a college education level. We have a very minimal footprint, they are heavily optimized, we add articles regularly (again professionally written) which have no links in them, just good 100% unique content. We don't add blogroll links (obvious footprint ppl!) and don't care about how many articles are on the homepage (it varies). We have operated this network for years with no negative side affects. My advice, treat your blog network as if it were producing a mill a year, something you cannot live without and if you treat it in that regard, Google will not penalize it. WP will shut it down, over 1500 unique articles and they said it was a spam blog ... agh ... but Google will not.
I really feel the problem with these networks is the spun unreadable content, add 100% unique high end content and Google will eat it up. Focus on the long term results.

OK, I can wrap this thread up really easily for everybody. Blog networks do what they do because people want everything cheap & nobody is really willing to pay for quality these days.
Quality costs a lot of money, thus, in order to make profit you need to price your cost & your time. Who'll pay for such service? Very few.
You can't provide unique content for say 60 posts, charge $100 & make anything on it that's worth spending your time. It won't even cover your content costs. Only hosting costs for 100 domains are pretty high burden. Buying domains, setting the sites up etc. takes a lot of time. I can go on forever.
Quality long lasting SEO costs a lot of money, a lot patience & time.
