So a month ago, an SEO company offered to do some on-page optimization and link building for us so we decided to test them out. After a month or so, I noticed a difference in how many impressions our page was appearing for the keywords that I had helped define for them so I went in and requested some reports for the work that they did.

An example of the type of work they did: they were listing multiple keywords into the footer section and not in a natural readable way, just straight keywords in a long line, some image compression plugins, edited the page titles to what I would consider just basically a long tail keyword with the company name following.

I then looked at the link building that they've been doing. These are the websites that they are using to provide "press releases" and coverage of the website.

What I'm trying to understand is, the work is so garbage, how are there changes in impressions and keyword position on Search Console, etc.

Long story short, I just wanted some help confirming that this SEO company is indeed doing black hat SEO tactics from people with higher expertise and awareness than me. Thanks in advance either way.

You paid someone to do link building for you to try and improve your search engine position... that is black hat link building. This is a very standard way of black hat link building at the low price ranges. Even though the sites they built on are lower quality, they can still be used effectively. But, I am guessing the company didn't put good effort into building out the links on those pages to look natural with high qualtiy original content.

Optimizing the titles like that is standard on page SEO work. Titles are extremely important to SEO. That change alone could make serious changes to your keyword impressions. I prefer titles which read naturally as they usually offer a better user experience. Not sure which ones give better click-through rates though. No point in getting more impressions if nobody is clicking the results because they don't like the title. So click through rate for those pages is something you need to evaluate.

If you feel ripped off, ask them for a refund of some of your money. If you paid more than $50 USD, you probably got ripped off. Hard to say without knowing all of the total work they did.

Really appreciate the feedback on each point! A lot of the work was extremely mediocre. I'll be terminating work with them for sure.

Keyword stuffing in the footer is an old trick in the book, but nowadays can cause your website to be penalized.

Link building through press releases isn’t actually bad, just depends on the site that is doing press releases. Are they spammed to death? Are they not credible sites? Etc.

If black hat is done in a proper way I guess $50 is nothing. Keywords takes same investment in both sort of SEO the only difference is fast results and volatile results in Black hat.
According to your definition of black hat link building 100% services on BHW are black hat. I guess they are not.

Most of them are grey hat , services in between white and black hat .

Of course almost 100% of link building services on BlackHatWorld are pure Black Hat.

Some ideas of the types of links considered black hat: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/66356?hl=en

What type of link building services here do you think are "grey hat"?

You know, actually google has no definition of grey hat or white hat. They tell you to do everything manually with the help of only your email or if someone keep your site on their. I think no one does this real organic SEO everything where you start using a bought email, proxy, link or anything is inorganic or unnatural.
Code:

even this site is done in a complete unnatural way.

Also, google is not able to penalize several hundred thousand sites to kill their income.

What you are saying just isn't true. You don't have to do everything manually with only help from other people linking. There is more things you can do 100% white hat.

Yes, Google penalizes hundreds of thousands of sites EVERY DAY. I think you don't understand how many websites there are online and how Google works.

Penalty doesn't mean 100% de-indexing just because of 1 black hat link.

Where I said this?

Also, looking answer for "you don't have to do everything manually" apart from manual job what you consider as white hat?

You didn't say it, but you implied it, because that's the only way it would hurt Google's business. Otherwise, Google is just shifting different websites around.

How else would a penality on hundreds of thousands of sites "kill their income?" Just to make it clear: There are over a BILLION websites on the internet.

There are lots of tools that help you with your search engine optimization strategies, and even link building, that are completely white hat.

Tools such as Hootsuite are used to automate posts to social media, and you can use other tools to analyze your traffic and engagement to know when the best time to post is to optimize engagement. While these are in fact automated tools creating links back to your site, they are not considered "link schemes" by Google. There are many tools for researching and analyzing data that are white hat that will make your work easier.

@SocialManager Are you aware of Zebra? Hootsuite if used with multiple account is a black hat tool.

...Mate... I can't continue doing this much longer. What you are saying is NONSENSE.

Please, feel free to give an explanation for the statements you are making. Tell us all about "Zebra" and how multiple accounts on Hootsuite makes it a "black hat tool."

Just logged back in. This convo got a lot more interesting to read haha. So going off of the convo, would continual work with these $50 SEO link builders creating web2.0 submissions, PR submissions, social bookmarketing, etc., lead to inevitable penalization. That's been my biggest concern but the price was pretty great. Curious what others experience are and how they're avoiding penalties. Would love to learn more about methods that can help defend against that.
