Bitch Slapped by Google?

My site which has more than 12k content pages got hit on 18-19-Feb. The hit as I can see is only on few pages that I actively built backlinks to. These pages had top ranking for a long period (about 2 years on the first page for several search terms).
I actually believe that the penalty is related to devaluing some article directories (which might also been flagged to give negative signals) and therefore we see the drop only on pages that we promoted and not entirely site wide.
The reason I don't think it is related to blog networks is that I have other pages that were promoted with BMR and these pages were not affected. The pages that were not affected, were not heavily linked from article directories.
My case is not a scientific test but it leads me to think that this Panda update (19-Feb) was devaluing some article directories and from there it snowballed.

Last year at december I noticed it dropped some but not a lot
January dropped a bit more. I am not sure if it had to do with holidays (didn't happen before). By this time I was losing 5k visitors/day gradually
But THIS month during the entire February it just went downhill, like it was attacked by a tornado

I am hoping this is temporary...If these are algorithmic penalties, there has to be a time limit of some sort on the penalty as its impossible to remove backlinks from these sources.
The way I see it is when you get the google dance. Or the slap by google. You can look at it in two ways. A good way, or a bad way. You can only have two attitudes and one of them sucks.... Except when you get sandboxed...... Than that pretty much just sucks. Cheers..... I have faith that your site will one day rise to its rightful position in the serps.

hmmmm so panda 3.3 was really a bitch. Still no solution. Maybe they marked private networks as bad domains? Iam sure most of you used aln and other networks. It would be very easy for google to join those networks and post their own articles and after some time collect all those domain names and mark them as bad

You are correct. I used many networks and basically every other kind of link available to create on the net.
The big variable in this penalty is how long it will last. There has to be a time limit to the penalty and the only reason I say this is b/c this is what google does. When google penalizes there is a time limit to the penalty and the longer the penalty, the more severe the infraction.

I don't think algorithmic penalties work that way. The penalty lasts as long as you have the links are pointed towards your site. I think you are thinking of manual penalties which have a specific time limit. But I don't know for sure, like everyone else. This is just the information that I have read.
Got slapped also. I was pulling about $2-3K a month in adsense, consistently for the last 3 years. Was #1 for very competitive keyword and #3 for ultra competitive kwd and a bunch of others. PR4 site.
Feel sick to my stomach right about now. I don't even want to check my rankings anymore.

You are correct. But, its not possible to remove all these links, its just not possible.
Manual penalties do have a time limit where algorithmic penalties do not.
But, its not really possible to know if your penalty is algorithmic or manual unless you submit a reconsideration request. If you submit a reconsideration request and google comes back and tells you, you have no manual penalty then you know its algorithmic.
But, can google put a penalty message into your webmaster tools account if its an algorithmic penalty? I don't know the answer to this question and I don't think anyone knows...

It seems to me that manual penalties would not be lifted until you submitted a reconsideration request. If they just gave a time limit, then everyone could wait it out and then continue on as if nothing happened. Why would Google allow that? What about trying to tell Google a competitior spammed your site and it wasn't you that did the
bad linking.
