Big discrepancy between Ahrefs and Moz referring domains

When looking for expired domains and checking referring domains, I am finding a very large difference between the number of referring domains Ahrefs and Moz show. For example on one domain Moz showed 637 referring domains, but Ahrefs shows just 1 referring domain only.

Why are they so different and which one should be trusted more?

non of them can be trusted. they are just tools to get an idea of how a domain might perform. these metrics mean nothing for ranking and the reason they have different results is because they got different datasets. links might not be spidered yet from one of them while the other already has them in the database. then some people block ahrefs and not moz and the other way around. so they will always show different results.
 
Each of them has their own spiders. They are just tools to help you out.

You have to just join the results of them to have most possible backlinks. Even though you will not have all backlinks, there are ways to hide them from those tools.
 
I think Ahrefs link/domain count, is more accurate than Moz - their spider work much more quickly, and usually within 24 hours, you'd get to see what are the links linking back to your domain.
Moz is slower, and least comprehensive imo - I'd go with ahrefs anytime due to the quicker spidering and update.
 
Does Ahrefs show just 1 referring domain in "Live" mode? What about "Recent" and "Historical" modes? Ahrefs could have seen that the links from these domains are lost today.
 
+1 for ahrefs crawler. Last time i checked and compare MOZ and Ahrefs - ahrefs referring domains is more accurate.
 
Ahrefs is nearly always more accurate although bit weird whats going on in this instance. Pm me domain and I'll do majestic for you.

Way better than semrush, moz, ....
I would say , it's
ahrefs > majestic > semrush > moz
 
ahrefs is the best tool at a fair price, watch the ahrefs tutorial video to see if you like it
 
Another +1 for Ahrefs and I also have Majestic. I prefer to use Ahrefs but it's nice to have another crawler and a different set of metrics (even though they are all flawed) for a 2nd opinion. I end up finding a decent amount backlinks not shown on both. But if you only have the budget for one I recommend Ahrefs.
