Disabling reputation system in lounge wont work here, as the rep can be issued through any other section for this lounge post. Rep circle continues..
I partially agree with OP, as for the past few months, so called "reputed" members stated trolling other members in hire a freelancer section too. If you don't like, just move on instead posting crap or making fun of newbies.
Bashing and harassing newbies with neg reps going beyond the way. Most of them forgetting that, they started their IM career as newbie.
Newbies (not spammers) are the bloodline for any forum. Let them ask stupid questions, try to answer or move on.

I think a survey would highlight what people actually want because each group would have a different opinions and needs to others. The only way to move forward is to find out whats important to everyone and act upon it.

I'm joined in 2009 as well and feel there's way too much newbie stupidity going on and a increase in overall hostility by some members. A lot of threads just have serve no purpose and maybe that has to do with SEO becoming more of a play to pay game nowadays. That said, every so often there is a thread that makes my time on BHW worthwhile.

and the newbies face a lot of competition as most of the methods are saturated + seo is no more a kid's toy..
unlike the so called senior members who started their IM career when there was no / less competition..
makes sense if they ask stupid questions cauz almost everyone is afraid to invest in a new venture where the have very less knowledge.
PS: I'm not supporting the idiotic threads. The newbies can use the search button and try to read and gather knowledge.. they ask stupid questions

in a polite respectful manner.

I would have to agreed with this. Its very hypocritical to make posts about time wasters in the lounge. It's an unattractive Waste of Time and some of us may be working simultaneously and entertaining each other. Don't like it? Don't read it.
On the other hand, tearing into noobs that ask silly questions or "guys" that say they are "girls" is
excessively cruel. I've done it more than twice but the most recent time left a really bad feeling because
that person posted a public photo saying, as we requested, holding a sign that said "You guys hurt me a lot BHW."
Remember, people are killing themselves because of being flamed more and more.
Being aloof or banning wannabees is a clean break. Being cruel en masse could have terrible repercussions.

Just a suggestion...
It may help to improve the quality of the forums by hiding the lounge posts from the search and homepage? That way if someone wants to see lounge posts, they can go to the lounge, and everyone else can find quality posts.

As a newbie its really daunting posting because of what you see being said and then made fun of so it actually puts people off writing quality stuff because we dont feel 'privileged' enough to share them.
I really want to do good threads but am held back by the fact it may be rebuked.

This is a non issue. Recognize this forum for what it is and treat it accordingly. If you're that butt hurt over shitty threads then you're probably spending too much time on here and not enough time working. This site is a great resource for my things, including recreation when you need a break from work. If this in any way inhibits your frequency to the site, then you were not using it in a healthy way in the first place.
In regards to a comment I saw about BHW not having anything of any substance: I've found amazing bits of information on here over the past couple years that have translated to me making money. Its astonishing at times how many people arent aware of these things, that ive seen for myself, on public posts that are extremely useful and entirely unexploited (that are, in fact, still up).

Is all about filtering the information that is here - for sure are a lot of "dumb" questions but is normal - we're not all born with all the information - I saw "guru" in SEO that was not able to work with MS Office properly. Each of us has to find his place in this world and to discover what is he good on.

How about a function that makes an error appear when someone trys to post a less-then-20-letters-message, including the words 'thanks' or 'try', saying 'There's a thanks button buddy, for f***s sake, use it!' (It would make absorbing the great information posted in so many places here so much more enjoyable...)

Thanks for your post qrazy, like any forum we depend on the members of the forum to look out for trolls and rep whores / useless posts. Use the "Report Post" button at the bottom of any post that isn't up to the quality we all expect from BHW, these are dealt with on a case by case basis. If you don't like the quality of what is in the lounge then I recommend you remove it from your feed, we can see from the stats many people really enjoy the lounge and spend a lot of their time there. The benefit of increasing the readership of BHW allows us to receive many differing opinions and views on IM related topics and often off topic subjects become great threads . The only other solution is to have all posts moderated before they go live and that's not the way to run any forum.

As other posters suggested disabling the reps on lounge section would be an good option so as to encourage people to contribute more towards IM and on topics.
