In your opinion.

What are the essential plugins for 2013 & what do they do?

Mine:
- w3 total cache (speeds load time)
- sociable ( add cool social share buttons )
- google xml sitemaps (make it easy for G to crawl your site)
- WP SEO Yoast (complete SEO plugin)
- WP Pop Up ( display pop ups anywhere )

W3 Total Cache has a hole in it exposing your password hash
Sociable is Good
Google XML Sitemaps causes excessive HTTP queries without the need to and puts load on your server and slows your site by the number of requests it makes to your db
WP SEO Yoast is GREAT !
WP Pop Up - I never used this :)

What does it have to do with the download section?

Have you upgraded to WordPress 3.5 yet ? Yoast doesnt seem to work with it at the moment and causes a textbox problem where it wont switch between visual and html .

Better WP Security (WordPress security)
Testimonial Basic (For testimonials)
Q3 Social Share (Social Media Sharing for Post)

What about cloudfront> anyone ever use that before? I've heard that it can speed up your load time and can replace your caching plugins like w3..

I am using Wordpress 3.5 and Yoast is working fine for me. You can ftp into the wp-content/plugins folder and rename the yoast plugin and just put -old at the end of the name and then reinstall it.

The plugin for AWS S3 with a cloudfront option?

I think its fair to say that using CDN won't necessarily give you a load independent performance increase straight of the bat

Heres a recent attempt at a test case using Cloudflare

Now this thread looks good in the blogging section. Here's my list:

1. Wordpress SEO by Yoast (Absolutely Essential for anything built on Wordpress)
2. Contact Form 7
3. Akismet (Nothing to say really... It's an awesome plugin)
4. Pods Framework (Great for building CMS sites using Wordpress in 2-3 hours)
5. Advanced Custom Fields( I use it sometimes when I don't have time to write functions)
6. BWS sitemap plugin
7. Statpress Community Edition (Awesome for quick stats of the visitors. Analytics sucks when it comes to quickness)
8. Device Theme Switcher (Great if you want to use different theme for mobile and tabs)
9. Email Subscription (This plugin is really simple, yet powerful if you know how to use it)
10. KeywordLuv
11. Lightbox Plus
12. Embed Plus (great for embedding YT videos)
13. WP-Paginate (better pagination)
14. Advanced Excerpt

For cache / security etc, I use my handmade custom code. I never take risk of using a third party plugin because of the vulnerabilities that the plugins might contain.

Whats the best plugin to speed up your site or is there no safe option here? Does anybody know some simple tweaks for dummies lol

Another plugin not yet mentioned is ShareThis. It is a plugin used to share your site on social media and bookmarking sites.

You might want to look at these.

W3 Total Cache (I know Daniel0cean mentioned that it has a security hole. You might want to verify if it still exists or not.)
W3 Total Cache improves the user experience of your site by improving your server performance, caching every aspect of your site, reducing the download times and providing transparent content delivery network (CDN) integration.

CloudFlare
CloudFlare is a content distribution network service that has a couple tools to speed up your site.

To speed up Wordpress, I use WP Super Cache.

Hi,

My advice for fellow WP users: minimize use of plugins. For instance, for sociable one can add those easily without a plugin. Similar thing can be done for contact form, etc.

As for W3 Total Cache, the exploit was fixed in the recent version.

ytterium
