I'd recommend Sony Vegas over After effects as it's easier for beginners.

I must be out of the loop.. nobody recommends final cut pro anymore? It used to be the defacto answer. I'll have to check out Sony Vegas.
 
Camtasia. It's rather inexpensive, and he'd probably have fun doing green screen stuff!

I'm using Movie Maker. And believe me, I'm really happy with this ! Don't try to become boss with every software. Start with one and you will become the boss of that one and that time you can do everything with that one :D
 
;) It means you will surprised him. Sony Vegas could be a prime choice but you didn't explain your definition of expensive. May be a product that is expensive for me doesn't expensive for you. However, in my opinion Sony Vegas is a good choice but expensive one.
 
Guys, Video software are available in the market. Which will best for you? it will depends on your targeted retaliations, other internal activities of video. So first you have to clear what types of video you wanted to prepare? If you wanted to make comedy or songs video or other normal video then you can install 'Sony vegas Pro'.
 
Sony vegas for most of editing and aftereffects for Vfx is what i use
 
Go for premiere pro editing or sony vegas. Hope you will find them worthy enough.
