An approach that has worked for me is buying .io domains, although they're quite expensive. For example, you're trying to rank for the word "cheap guitars". You buy the domain cheapguitars.io since most of them are available compared to .com, then you optimize the homepage for the keyword 'cheap guitars' and it'll pretty rank for it without backlinks after a while. For low to medium competition keywords, you can rank on the first page easily.

If the brand name is more important to you than the TLD extension, go for the name with a lesser known extension. You overall brand promotion campaign should make up for having a more obscure TLD.

It doesn't matter much which TLD domain you have. It hardly counts for your website's seo.
I think the entire TLD/domain extensions are now just the same imo - previously exact match .com domains would yield supernatural ranking ability for that exact match keyword, but after G has updated their algorithm, EMDs are now pretty powerless and it behaves just like any other domain extensions out there.
But still, I am not seeing many of those fancy domain extensions being ranked - yes there are possibly 1 out of 50, but it's just simply too little and majority that are listed are primarily .coms, .net, etc.
But if you are looking for an EMD that can rank very well for local search results, then go for a local TLD extension instead.

No difference with TLD, I have been getting a bunch of TLD's that look good. Hopefully people will be more understanding towards websites that are not .com. Majority still prefer .com but I've noticed more businesses using other TLD's lately, even for their main site.
If it's free - then just grab it, and you can definitely create a website out of it.
Furthermore, modern day seo EMDs has very little power not, and every new sites begin just the same - all at 0 metric, and you gradually build that upwards over time.
So that domain extension should do just fine.
But personal preference - if you are going for local seo, I prefer a local domain extension instead, as that is doing a killing for modern day seo.

Google has previously stated that they make no distinction between TLDs. However, a major ranking factor is click through rate. People are less likely to click on a cheap domain extension because they are often used for spam and thin content sites. Just go with .com, even if you have to spend an hour finding a domain name that doesn't suck. If your domain extension causes an even slight reduction in CTR, you are making your job much more difficult. Just take that out of the equation and go with .com and be sure to get an SSL certificate. Then you'll have a good foundation to start from.
