I particularly enjoy reading about SEOA, but scratch my head at the often obvious gullibility. I’m not an ‘expert’ on website marketing or SEO, but it’s a general truism that if you read 10 pieces of advice, you’ll get 10 different suggestions - with offers of help across various price ranges.

The competition and optimism behind marketing is generally an American phenomenon. Everyone wants to be top dog, but few achieve it. What are you selling? Do you want to be up amongst the sell anything Amazon and the food KFC? Here’s the bad news, it isn’t going to happen. Yes, I know your website is the best among the other 876 million in the US alone, but unless you have an advertising budget of $213m per year (KFC), your name is Kim Kardashian (unfortunately), or your best friend is Larry Page (Google), it’s generally going to stay a needle in a haystack.

HTML

Having said that, there are ways to both optimize and promote your website. The first and most obvious is to learn the language and structure of html. Let’s throw a hypothetical question out here. If you advertised in a newspaper to promote your US business, what language would you use? A mixture of Chinese, Urdu and English? Rhetorically, of course not because no one would understand what you’ve said. Look on search engines then as blind people who can only read braille. It doesn’t matter about your beautifully designed website, search engines can’t see it and if they also can’t read what you’ve said (html) your website is going nowhere.

You can learn html from your competitors. Take six of your favourite marketing competitor sites, or the major successful ones and follow their html practices. To do this, copy their url and paste it into the address at https://validator.w3.org/. Select the different document formats related to your own website and click on ‘more options.’ Make sure the ‘show source’ box is ticked. Then click on the ‘check’ box. At the bottom of the page you will find the html of the site you checked. Don’t copy it, but follow the structure.

You’re now talking to Google in a language it understands and the Google taxi will take your website to those who request it.

Optimize and Promote

If content is king, poor content combined with bad practice will destroy your website. People come to your website for two reasons. a) You have something they may be interested in buying, or b) Your headline was enticing. They did not come to join your advertising campaign, or get involved with your oh so predictable, ‘calls to action.’ Three pop ups in twenty seconds soliciting for emails, newsletters and ‘bargain offers’ will see a huge increase in your bounce rate. Isn’t there anything more annoying than shopping on the high street followed around by an aggressive salesperson when you’re just browsing?

Promote your site by content. Start with a headline or phrase check at https://aminstitute.com/headline/

This is not a standard useless generator. You do the work and the analyzer gives you a score based on intellect, empathy and spirituality (deeper meaning). Depending on your product, look for a combined, or individual score approaching 100%. My attempts didn’t sell any shoes or promote a restaurant, but in my profession it was dynamite and I achieved a triple impact of 120% with a five word phrase; ‘Delivering quality education, providing opportunities.’ The follow up of, ‘University educated, internationally experienced, professionally competent’ at 150% intellectual on my resume kept me in work for years.

Promote your website and product(s) by writing on blogs or trade associations, not just social media. Lets’ face it, if you’re selling something and you can’t write 500 words on what you’re selling, perhaps you should try something else? Your promotion on social media lasts 24 hours if you’re lucky, but informative articles last for years.

Brand yourself or your business and don’t just link out to your website. Anyone heard of ‘The Towers’ in America? OK, I’ll rephrase that. Anyone heard of ‘Trump Towers?’ If you sell shoes, why not write an article on ‘How to keep leather shoes in tip top shape from an expert.’

Tailor you content to your audience. ‘Bargain’ and ‘cheap’ cater to one section. ‘Quality’ and ‘bespoke’ to another. If you’re aiming for the top end of the market write formally and check your grammar at https://www.paperrater.com/

Use two or three keywords, but concentrate on long-tail phrases to reduce competition. ‘Easter eggs’ receives 558,000,000 Google choices. The long-tail phrase of, ‘Bargain chocolate Easter eggs in Madison Wisconsin’, 772,000.

This is a brief overview and of course, what suits one may very well not suit another. Yet if you join the herd expect the anonymous herd response. All links in this post are free and will help you at no cost other than your time. :)
