Check out Latex , available on MacOS, Linux and Windows. My way of describing it is like html for PDFs . It has it's advantages and disadvanges, but if you find a good template - you can make a really neat looking PDF!

Any text editor works...like Word.. but if you want to get graphic specific.. i would use Adobe indesign.

Open office is real nice to use for making an ebook. It's simple and it has all the necessary features plus it is free.

Use whatever word processor you like. Save your finished product in .doc format and there's a free website that will convert it to .pdf.
