I have a site that receives a few hundred payments every month ranging from just $1.50 to $5. My chargeback rate has been less than 1% since June. I'm looking for something safe and reliable that wont fuck me over on the off chance I encounter a fraudster. Suggestions?

There's Venmo -- no fees, I believe. Not sure how it integrates with a site. Or you could do something like Authorize.net... they don't have the .30 transaction fee and if you're doing over $1k, it's probably worth it to look into something like that.

Hi Plus44,

You mentioned chargebacks so I am assuming you are processing credit cards. This means you need your own direct merchant account (MID) or to find another large aggregator like Paypal which will give you an account to process credit cards. I am in the direct merchant account industry so I don't know much about other options similar to Paypal which provide credit card processing. However, I can tell you that e-wallet systems like Venmo won't work because they don't process credit cards, and gateways like Authorize.net are not going to help you because gateways don't provide the merchant account (MID). You have to have your own MID to plug into a gateway like Authorize.net. Most merchant account providers are OK with chargebacks up to 2%, less than 1% like you are doing is very good. If you have the odd month where you get above the 1% or 2% metric you will be OK - the problems begin if you have 3 months in a row of higher chargeback levels. If you cannot find something that will work similar to Paypal, you should just google "merchant account" or "high risk merchant account" and start reaching out to providers. There are many other factors they will consider before accepting you, such as what is your product or service (is it legal), where you are located (what country), where you sell to, how you bill the customer and what are your Terms, etc.

By default I use Paypal, but many of my customers don't even have a Paypal account to begin with. I like to have other options for people that live in countries where PayPal isn't supported/convenient. Sometimes my buyers use prepaid cards and run into problems on the paypal checkout page and bounce. I don't really care about how high the transaction fee is for each payment...Just more worried about the dispute process and fees. If a customer opens a dispute though their bank for a $2 payment, the payment processor should not be charging me $15 for each of them.

Hi again Plus44,

I completely understand your concern about chargeback fees. With chargeback fees being our primary concern then I don't think a credit card processing account (merchant account) would be a good idea for you. The chargeback fees for credit card processing are even worse than $15 - usually in the $25 to $30 range for each chargeback. Hopefully someone else in this forum can suggest a payment platform for you which doesn't have these types of high dispute fees. Good Luck!
