For discovering long tail keywords and their search volume, google keyword planner is the market leader, and most keyword research tools on the market get their data by scraping them, so in that regard, it's better to skip the intermediary and go to the source.
But google keyword planner will not tell you anything about how competitive a keyword is to rank it organically - beware that the competition column they provide refers to adwords competition and it has absolutely no correlation to organic seo competition.
To find out whether you can rank for a particular keyword or not, the industry standard is to analyze the top ten results in google that appear for your keyword and figure out whether they are easily beaten or not. There are other types of keyword research tools that provide this data for you, Ferzy Keyword Competitive Analysis in my signature is one of them, and it's free currently for a limited amount of searches if you want to give it a try.

Google keyword planner is shit but it is the most accurate indicator to keyword search volume. Best way for keyword research is to find keywords > Google keyword planner > keywordtool.io to generate long tail variants based from autosuggest. Best of luck

Completely agree. Go to google keyword planner to get some good suggestions and in order to estimate the competition look at things like total exact match, DA, PA, amount of facebook shares and twitter tweets, PR, total backlinks to domain, and backlinks to page... The Free edition of SEO Revolt will help you analyze the top 10 in google for your keyword or top "2 or 3" in google if you want to check keywords in bulk (unlimited amount of keywords if I'm not mistaken). of course google keyword planner is best one but if u want more you can use http://ubersuggest.org/
Your brain. Google planner and stuff works well. But your brain is the best free tool. I look at shitty competitors that I know I can beat and see which keywords they are ranking for with ahrefs/moz. There's also a phone app that is basically ahrefs but gives you a ton more free results (it's the top app on android if you type in seo currently). Best kw planner in sum.... spying on your competition that sucks more than you do <3.
