I have a finance blog and I can get a link from any large site e.g forbes, reuters, entrepreneur. Which site would be best for my rankings?

Odds are you would be 100 times better building a variety of quality links that are going to be significantly less expensive than one link from one of those types of sites.

The fact of the matter is that those links, although strong and aid in your authority, don't change your life as to rankings in Google alone.

I'd almost never recommend that a client spends that kind of money on one link.

How much is the maximum you would suggest for a guest post?

Guest posting is a good strategy as part of your overall backlink structure but should not be a main focus so the amount to spend is dependent on the total budget/backlink portfolio.

The kinds of links you mention above, should someone be able to get them for you, are going to be high dollars and unless your SEO budget is in the mid to upper 4 figures on a monthly basis they make no sense to me.

I can get them for £170GBP is that ok

I would think that you are unbalanced in your SEO if you were to spend close to 20% on one link unless you have been building out a backlink portfolio that has some history and variety.

I already have a great backlink profile, I am just building links to specific posts

In that case Guest Posts make sense but don't expect them to rank you right off as they are more for authority as opposed to SEO rankings.

Niche like finance is great to have. Guest posting, press release, article submission. Guest posting would be great if it will be in finance niche site.

What would you suggest for ranking?

There is so much to go into making that call due to no site being the same and few sites having similar competition.

Diversification is important, relevance is important, link velocity is important, quality of links is important, anchor text ratios are important... it is nearly impossible to tell you what to do without seeing what you have done, which KWs you are targeting, what your competition is doing and where you currently are in the rankings.

I'd be a liar if I told you to follow a "six step plan" to page 1 rankings without all that background information and so would anyone else.
