Great way to start is by choosing Wordpress over Blogger. Wordpress just turned 10 years old. It's the world's best CMS platform.

blogspot blogs have a faster indexing rate. I would definitely go with blogspot if its under the free domain category. My blogger blogs gets indexed on the same day itself.

Wordpress is not a bad choice. Its cleaner and more fun to blog. It has a lot of tools as well. The only downside is that monetization options are quite limited.
