What is the best method of whitehat/greyhat backlinking for a local business website?
For example, is tiered link building advisable?

try local forum and local maps sites... i've seen somebody ranking very well using this kind of method

see what sites your competitors are linking to (if above your site) and then try and get a link from those sites - community directories, industry directories or major sites/organizations that your niche is related to - generally these will be ranked higher than you - try and get a listing on their site.

setup a review site to grab reviews (hopefully positive) on yelp, foursquare etc

What is an example of a "local map site" not familiar with that.

I've had good results by using typical links from blog comments and even a particular fiver gig. But my local results are based on the consumer using the location in the search term. for example las vegas plumber

To enhance your website local presence, start building links with authoritative local blogs that are relevant to your business niche. Contact blog owners and suggest them writing guest posts; leave reasonable informative comments to other posts and try to build good relations with your niche influences, etc..

Also, note that today local search heavily depends on a new type of data or link building known as citations. Basically, citations are mentions of your business name and address (and sometimes even a website) even if there is no actual link provided. Great list of useful things. The G highlighter is much easier to use now. I copied how TMZ is doing onsite tags and descriptions. Or pick a top local site and look at the source.

I tried using schema in my wordpress page templates and it won't stick!

This only happens when I set my workfolder to the path of my server profile and not on a local machine path. After moving the files to a local folder, everything is fine...
